DD #1 is all set. For lack of information and discipline, she did not apply for any scholarships. Since she is going to an elite school and we don't qualify for need-based financial assistance, we will not get any $$ help for her. DD#2, also a competitive student, is currently a sophomore. When is the earliest time to start applying for outside scholarships? Beginning of junior year?

I have found fastweb.com a great resource for scholarships. Its a free site. Some stipulate that student must be incoming Fall '07. There is still time to apply for some scholarships-check it out and good Luck!

She should look for scholarships this summer.

It's never late.

You want to make sure she applies for that Discover scholarship.

I also recommend the scholarship for "The Fountainhead."

If she won't start college until next fall, there are PLENTY of scholarships that have deadlines between now and then so your DD #1 shouldn't give up so easily. Start with the fastweb site already mentioned. Don't forget - there are also some scholarships for kids already IN college, so she should keep looking for those too. There are a few scholarships for high school juniors, but most are for high school seniors. So, it's not a bad idea to start looking for younger daughter now, but she probably won't be applying until Senior year for most of them.

A friend of mine made it her daughter's summer "job" to research and prepare applications for scholarships. I really like this idea because it is excellent practice for college applications and avoids the application burnout that comes in January.
