im applying to risd pre college program, and was wondering how much my grades factor into the selection process. i have a 2.5 GPA.
also, how does RISD compare to CSSSA? i went to calarts last summer and it was fun, but i was surprised by the lack of workload and the campus. someone from RISD(he told us he looks over the college applications) visited our school(i go to LACountryHSfortheArts) and i fell in love with the campus. hoping to go there. But i'll need a full scholarship to both pre college and college. urrg, scared.

The classmate of my kid ( I don’t call they are friends but moms are close to gossip a ton) gotten full plus stipend last summer but he is almost top of the class brain plus art ( that explains why kids aren’t close) and the family is broke, though mom works like everyone else and have microwave and TV.
You are from one of the best schools sorry it will be tough.
Won’t hurt to try, pre college is more give-able, I doubt college would give you full, if any aid at all.
Check how much travel would cost and add to the budget. getting to Providence is bit of pain.

I’d suggest you apply for a few pre college programs and don’t set your heart on a specific one. This way you can apply for the finaid and see which one will give you the most. I am guessing your portfolio will be the most important thing, so stop worrying about your grades and start bolstering/cutting down your portfolio into your best 6-10 pieces. Even though you don’t have the best grades, it’s necessary you have an excellent portfolio.

As a side note, RISD typically values technical skill over creative blah blah stuff. I’m sure you know this already, just don’t submit something lacking in technical skill. Also, quality over quantity ALWAYS in the portfolio.

Best of luck to you w/apps and portfolio!

If you passed exam and doing fine there, I bet your works are top notch.
Only trouble is if this is not yet your last summer, big summer aid money tend to go to would be seniors even your works are as good as theirs.
I noted college info there seems performing arts/ west coast heavy.
What is your intended major?
I liked SFAI, UCLA, Willamette, PNCA in that order.
If Innerspark was underwhelming to you, I am afraid none of them would do.
like the kid above said, apply few more in the East that won’t ask for the deposit up front and compare their offers.
Good luck

PS
even RISD was underwhelming to the kid because he doesn’t drink, smoke, doesn’t want to watch Familyguy marathon. Studio time was limited and taught nothing new that he didn’t know, the town was boring.
There are many positive reviews of course, it is up to the individual.

Unlike many independent art schools, RISD does put a great deal of emphasis on academic performance as well as artistic ability and creativity. The average SAT score for admitted students is around 1200/1800, and RISD looks for a minimum high school GPA of 3.0. Of course, these general guidelines might well be waived in the case of exceptional talent.

Also be aware that RISD is known to be very, very tight with financial aid. So you should definitely have some backup choices.

thank you so much for the feedback! but what confuses me about risd pre college program is their policy on international students. im pending for a green card but live in la. it says “All non-US citizens are required to obtain an F-1 student Visa in order to participate in the Pre-College Program. To obtain an F-1 student Visa, all non-US citizens must fill out a Student Visa Information (SVI) form” and "Originals of the completed SVI form and ISR document must accompany complete program application materials and payment in full (including all tuition, fees and housing and dining expenses), and must be received at RISD ". but for scholarship students “a nonrefundable deposit, only if you plan to attend the program even if a scholarship is not awarded: $500 is due from all boarding students”. so does that mean they dont award scholarships to international students??? i asked the person that visited our school about this and he said if my parents pay tax (they do) im eligible???

That’s the kind of very specific question that can only be answered by someone in RISD’s pre-college office, not by anyone here on CC. You should contact the school directly. You might try calling or emailing Mark Torick; I think he’s still the director of the program (but even if he’s not, he’ll get you to the right person).
