Rising Sophomore taking questions

Q:I’ve heard many people get written up every weekend, do you know of any kids on disciplinary or housing probation? Will people get unofficial warnings instead of official violations sometimes?
A: They’re pretty hard on you your freshman year, but also keep in mind that the people who get written up are just stupid. The first weekend we had so many write ups just because people would go crazy with drinking and some didnt know their limits and got sick. You just have to be careful and you’ll be fine. No, I dont know anyone on disciplinary or housing probation. I’ve heard of maybe one kid on it, but he’s fine now. A lot of RAs will sometimes give warnings to freshmen, if theyre either on newton or upper during the first semester. if you get caught doing whatever is worthy of a write up on off campus places or lower, they usually dont give warnings.

Q:I got assigned a forced triple…are they really that bad? also, i’m in fenwick, how is it? is it actually connected to those other dorms?
A: They’re not bad at all. People think they’re terrible, but theyre really ok. it depends on how you arrange the room and you can make it look bigger. it’s really fine. fenwick is nice! it’s a little further away but it’s a nice dorm! :)

Q: there are windows in the rooms of the basement floors of residence halls right?
A: THey should! …yes i think they do have windows.

Q:Same, i wanted to know what its like to live forced triple. Are storages sufficient? Definetly scared about that
A: Plenty of storage space. you’ll be fine. but if you can, try and move in first.

Q: Is wolfman’s test that hard (chem) even if you took honors chem and ap chem in high school
A: get out of wolfman. period.

Q:How long are discussion classes (chem and calc)?
A: 50min

Q: If you do work study, does anyone know how long you have to work for (hours/day or week)
A: ? Not sure/not sure what the question is asking. are you trying to ask what the time commitment is for working if you’re doing work study?

Q: Are 8 am classes brutal?
A: YES. I was BARELY able to make it to my 9am. But if you’re a morning person then I guess its fine?

Q: Where are Freshmen writing classes? It saids on my schedule that its in o’neil hall. is that the same as o’neil library?
A: They’re all over campus. No designated hall/building. Yep! There are classrooms in o’neill

Q: Is Merkert to o’neil a far walk?
A: 5min.

errr…the other questions have pretty much been answered thoroughly…haha awk.
sorry guys! i’ve been on vacation! room assignments! yay start getting to know your roommate(s)!

Is it possible to get to O’Neill from Carney in ten minutes?

Carney to O’Neill are probably the 2 academic buildings farthest from each other but it shouldn’t take more than 5 or 6 minutes at most… I used to walk all the way from upper to the gate in under 15 minutes. Campus is really not that big.

Thank you so much, that answer was excellent! It sounds that I got carried away with the BC stereotype, haha. I am very happy indeed that some Muslim representation exists, just in case. The Religious Quest class sounds very intriguing.

And of course, you’re right about the study-and-party vibe. Almost all students I know in high school have to choose one or the other. Good to know you don’t. Thanks again :)

Two questions on books. First, when I checked to see what books I need on the bookstore site each class had about 8-9 books each. I assume its because I’m in some fairly heavy reading classes such as Intro to Politics and Perspectives but is this a normal amount?

Also, when you recommened I order them? Should I do it now or wait till school starts?

How long does it take to walk from Carney to More Hall? That’s actually one of my transitions…

Two questions on books. First, when I checked to see what books I need on the bookstore site each class had about 8-9 books each. I assume its because I’m in some fairly heavy reading classes such as Intro to Politics and Perspectives but is this a normal amount?

I remember last semester I had nearly 20 books for perspectives. It is a good amount of reading but often you aren’t reading the entire books. Sometimes you’re just reading a chapter or two out of them. One trick I would definitely recommend for Perspectives is to read online summaries (such as Spark Notes) of your assigned reading before you start. It really helps you to understand the reading. I find it difficult to fully comprehend the philosophers and be prepared for class on the first read.

Also, when you recommend I order them? Should I do it now or wait till school starts?
It’s really up to you. I don’t think it matters either way. I would just check the return policy in case you end up dropping a class and want a full refund on the books.

Q: Is it possible to get to O’Neill from Carney in ten minutes?
A: Yeah. It should take you less than 5 mins.

Q:First, when I checked to see what books I need on the bookstore site each class had about 8-9 books each. I assume its because I’m in some fairly heavy reading classes such as Intro to Politics and Perspectives but is this a normal amount?
A: Yeah, for honors i had 20 books as well. It’s definitely normal. Also some of these books are like 100 pages.

Q:Also, when you recommened I order them? Should I do it now or wait till school starts?
A: if you’re going to preorder your books via bc’s bookstore, do it before you move in. that way you can just pick them up–but check the return policy. usually it’s ok. you can also sometimes get books cheaper online via amazon or another bookstore. to save some money, try not to buy them brand new. used is just fine.

Q:How long does it take to walk from Carney to More Hall? That’s actually one of my transitions…
A: About 10 min. At the most, i would think.

thank you for the answers!!

I just had another quick question. When you do the textbook search on the online bookstore, what exactly is the “section”

They ask you for

Program
Term
Dpt
*** Section **

What i’m trying to say is… how do we find that out?

@swimmingco-- go to your Agora portal and enter the “My Services” tab. Under “Academics and Courses”, click “Current Courses and Grades”. There, you will see your schedule roster. Next to each course will be a code. For example, Intro to Physiology’s code is BI30301. This is interpreted as Biology course 303, section 01. So basically the section is the last two numbers of that course code. I recommend using this page to find all your textbooks/ course codes. Hope that helps.

Thank youu!!

I wasn’t sure if it was the last 2 digits or the CR number they gave us!
By the way, anyone know any good websites that sell/ lets you rent textbooks for a cheaper price?

Amazon has been pretty good for my books, and they have a 2-day shipping deal for students.

should I really switch out of wolfman because I got a 3 on my Ap chem exam and I’m taking him for general chemistry. Why should i switch? Is his class average grades bad? Who should i take instead?

My son is in the honors program and did apply for honors housing. He did not get accepted into honors housing(and is fine with that). Was wondering how many honors kids are in other non honors dorms ?

As for freshman dorms, are there some that are more"crazy" than others or are they all about equal?

Is Boston College really that preppy? For someone like me who is pretty casual dressing, likes to be outdoors, and is pretty adventurous, would I be the odd one out? And while I’m sure there’s every different type of student there, I would prefer to not be the odd ball.

Thanks

I didn’t know most regulare triples had bathrooms. This true for newton too? what about hardeif you know by chance.

Thanks

Are BC athletes kept really busy? (My roommate is on the swim team so I’m wondering how often she’ll be in the room. Same as a regular student?)

Do you have any recommendations for literature classes?

Do people go to the Target shopping night? I’m session 7 so I was just going to get stuff when everyone else was moving in but should I wait for the night thing to go with everyone else?

Q: should I really switch out of wolfman because I got a 3 on my Ap chem exam and I’m taking him for general chemistry. Why should i switch? Is his class average grades bad? Who should i take instead?
A: he’s the type of professor that expects a lot from you. he’s difficult in that you really dont know what your grade is until the end of the semester because he doesnt curve until the end. but i’ve heard you learn a lot from him so it’s up to you. he’s not TERRIBLE. he’s a great teacher, his tests are (sometimes) fair, and yes, his class average grades are bad, but after he curves them it’s not too bad. macfadden comes highly recommended.

Q:My son is in the honors program and did apply for honors housing. He did not get accepted into honors housing(and is fine with that). Was wondering how many honors kids are in other non honors dorms ?
A: Really? I’ve never heard of that happening. You should check with ResLife. I opted to NOT do honors housing and am very pleased with my decision, though I do have some regrets. But he’ll be able to make a lot of friends (non honors) which is also great. I’d say it’s either somewhere between 25 and 50% are not in honors dorms. most of that chunk opted out of honors housing. Actually–a lot of honors guys opt out of honors housing. So, I wouldn’t be worried. It’s great either way!

Q: As for freshman dorms, are there some that are more"crazy" than others or are they all about equal?
A: Gonzaga and Fitzpatrick will be the loudest on weekends because they’re closest to the stairs leading to upper so a lot of people will pass through the halls (esp when its cold–a great shortcut.) kostka was the all girls dorm that used to be the all boys dorm. other than that, they’re all pretty much the same.

Q: Is Boston College really that preppy? For someone like me who is pretty casual dressing, likes to be outdoors, and is pretty adventurous, would I be the odd one out? And while I’m sure there’s every different type of student there, I would prefer to not be the odd ball.
A: I chose BC because I loved the preppy-ness. the stereotype definitely exists but it doesn’t overpower the campus in my opinion. there are so many different types of students that you’ll find your niche-even if it takes some time. no, you wont be the odd one out. honestly, to class a lot of kids just wear like jeans or yoga pants from sept-april. once spring hits then every girl will be in a sundress and all the guys will be in shorts so dont worry about it.

Q: Are BC athletes kept really busy? (My roommate is on the swim team so I’m wondering how often she’ll be in the room. Same as a regular student?)
A: Early mornings. Usually athletes have practice early in the morning and then go to classes. my friend on the swim team had freakishly early practices, then she’d go to class, went to swim meets until feb, gone for whole weekends at a time, and then come back and do her work til late.

Q:Do you have any recommendations for literature classes?
A: can you be a little more specific?

Q:Do people go to the Target shopping night? I’m session 7 so I was just going to get stuff when everyone else was moving in but should I wait for the night thing to go with everyone else?
A: yes! it’s a lot of fun. last year it was pouring rain so everyone went wet. haha. yeah what everyone does is you get all the stuff you need from target and bed bath and beyond with your parents the day/weekend you move in. the other stuff you dont really need or need to consult with your roommates on you should get it at this night. so basically, if you want a tv, get it before. get the fridge before, get the fans before. target night is for little things like room decorations, snacks for the room, things you may have forgotten, etc.

I didn’t know most regular triples had bathrooms. This true for newton too? what about Hardey, if anyone knows by chance.
Srry last post went wacky.

Thanks
