Rising Sophomore taking questions

Beach17, I’m going into my first year and opted out of Honors Housing also. BC sent a letter regarding some Honors information earlier this summer and they mentioned that around 50% of Honors kids opt out of Honors housing altogether. I myself will be in Keyes and I know of at least one other Honors kid in the same building, so your son will probably find another H student wherever he is.

Crackerjack, what regrets did you have regarding housing?

^ I was in Keyes last year. You’re lucky for being so close to Stuart but the building is pretty isolated from all the others.

I’m enrolled in Elementary Spanish I (RL01513) and currently under the instructor it says Dept, which I know means that the instructor hasn’t been assigned yet. I was wondering when that would happen because I am trying to order my books for school. I looked on the bookstore to see what the other sections’ required materials were and for the other sections it all seemed to be the same book (Imagenes and the activity book that goes with it) so I was wondering if it is safe to assume that these are the required materials I need to get?

Q: I didn’t know most regular triples had bathrooms. This true for newton too? what about Hardey, if anyone knows by chance.
A: Mine did, but I was on upper. Not all triples have bathrooms, though. they exist i think in gonzaga, fitz, xavier, maybe fenwick? But it’s only on certain floors and certain triples. For example, my friend in the basement in xavier had one, but my other friend on the first floor of xavier didnt have one. I dont think it’s true for newton. but newton triples are bigger than upper ones.

Q:Crackerjack, what regrets did you have regarding housing?
A: About honors housing I sort of regret not doing it because it’s a much smaller dorm compared to gonzaga and everyone in medeiros knew everyone else really well and i hardly knew half of my floor. so, it’s a lot easier to make friends if your dorm is smaller which is why people placed on newton have a lot of really close friends and are like bffs with everyone on their floor because there’s a lot less people. In the end, about 75% of my friends did honors so it got me thinking about the time I couldve had with them had I been in honors as well. Gonzaga was great, though. I met so many different kinds of people. The downside was that it was HUGE. 67 girls on one hall versus say 30 (newton). Again, it was a lot harder to make friends in the beginning because there were so many girls it got to be a lot. But i’m happy i didn’t do honors because I now have a good mix of friends.

A: Yeah, it’s pretty safe. All language classes follow the exact same syllabus. But I assumed the same thing last year and ended up getting the wrong books because they were going with a new edition of the textbook or were trying it out–something like that. You can get it just to be safe, but just know that the textbooks might change. Sometimes professors send out emails before school starts saying exactly what you need. If you can, wait a little longer–or get it now and just make sure there’s a return policy.

I was just looking at the 3D floorplans for the dorms and was wondering, do the dorms come with those bookshelves and wall shelves they show?

[Residence Hall Rooms: 3D Floorplans - Office of Residential Life - Boston College](http://www.bc.edu/offices/reslife/lifeinhalls/residencehalls/floorplans/floorplan_3D.html)

And BCHSEagles, could you give me the lowdown on Keyes? I’m in the basement if that helps at all. What’s the downside from being far from Cushing and the other Newton dorms? And are the gym/library/lounge I see in the floorplans any good?

Thanks for the continued answers!

hhhmmm, weird that my son applied for honors housing and didn’t get in. Seems that is not the norm. I know he did not put much thought into the questions they asked on the application( I think he wanted to be in upper and applied to honors for that fact). I am just disappointed because I think it sounded like a great opportunity. He does not want to question res life about it, which is fine. I just hope he doesn’t feel a disconnect from the honors program because he doesn’t live there. Maybe so many people applied this year there wasn’t enough room?

@beach17: Yes, there was most likely not enough room to put everyone there who applied, that’s why you have to answer questions rather than just check a box. Same thing happens for upperclassmen honors housing; not everyone who applies will get it. There are plenty of honors kids living all over campus, and if anything that’s a good thing because your son can expand his friend groups and meet a more diverse group of people (because the honors program isn’t exactly known for its diversity).

crackerjack, how did you meet most of your friends? your dorm, classes, activities? were you close with your roommate? are most people close with their roommate?

also whats your favorite place to study on campus?

Can you describe the weekend of the average BC freshmen? more specifically in terms of nightlife…

Q: crackerjack, how did you meet most of your friends? your dorm, classes, activities? were you close with your roommate? are most people close with their roommate?
A: I have two main groups of friends. My one group is a mix of people in my honors class and other people that I’ve met through them. We sort of combined our group of friends at the beginning and now we’re this big group of really good friends haha. The other group of friends is through extracurriculars. We all invest a lot of time in this one activity and by spending so much time with each other we’ve all become really good friends. So it was a bit of a mix.

Yeah, I’m really close to one of my roommates, the other one not so much. We had our fair share of drama as I said earlier in this post haha, but we’re girls. so, the guys had a lot less roommate drama lol. I think a lot of people are friends with their roommates but not best friends. it just gets to be a bit much at times if you are bffs with your roomie just cuz it ends up being with them all the time. yep. a lot of people are in the middle between the two extremes of despising one another and absolutely loving eaach other to the extent that they’re rooming together again soph year. It all depends, but you just have to make the best of the situation.

Q:also whats your favorite place to study on campus?
A: I get A LOT of work done in bapst library just because it’s so quiet and secluded. that’s where I go for if i need to study for a test. If i just want to get some work done or if I want to go somewhere in between classes to study, I go to oneill, since it’s less quiet, but there are enough distractions to keep you awake during those long afternoons. During finals (in between finals and such) I like to find an abandoned classroom in devlin or fulton since you have the entire board to write on or there’s lots of space to spread papers, books, and notes. i avoided studying in my room at all costs since it was so distracting–but sometimes i opted to study in the study lounges when it got colder since i didnt have to walk outside and it wasnt my room.

Q:Can you describe the weekend of the average BC freshmen? more specifically in terms of nightlife…
A: friday: classes, yoga, go out into boston, dinner, watch a movie, and once it hits 10pm, go out and find a party…stay out late and come back to the dining hall to grab a quick late night snack. saturday: sleep in, grab some lunch, football game (in the fall) do some work in the afternoon, dinner, go out to boston, watch a movie, once it hits 10pm go out and find a party. sunday: sleep in and get your work done. some people go out friday AND saturday, some dont. a lot of time people will go out one night and stay in the other night to get some work done or study if they have a paper due or a test the next week. there are also sporting events going on all weekend as well. so that’s another option freshmen resort to.

what is the party scene for freshmen like?

What’s the best freshman dorm to live in? I’m in Xavier on upper

@Beach17, I got into honors housing, but I’ve come to discover that some people in Medeiros aren’t even part of the honors program. What I suspect is not only a selectivity in the application process but also the inability to find a compatible honors roommate. I wouldn’t sweat it too much. All honors kids are welcome to Medeiros events.

Where do you go specifically in Boston? 18+ clubs? concerts? plays? Harvard speaker series?

Speaking of which…Does BC ever get speakers? Just for small gatherings, not the author of the book we’re reading

What kind of research opportunities are there?

Hey guys!

So I found out that I was assigned a quad… I put this down as my first choice (was I really lucky or did I get it cause no one else wants it?) but I was disappointed because I didn’t look at the 3D rendering until after I was placed in one. I assumed that a quad was like 2 small bedrooms and a common area…obviously, after looking at the 3D rendering I learned that this isn’t the case… In your opinion, what will a freshman quad be like? good?

Thanks!

^ I had a quad on newton. It was a large rectangular room with one wall of just closets. It really wasn’t anything special. To be honest, it’s going to be tough living with three other people in one big room until you get a routine down. I recommend bunking beds otherwise your room becomes a maze like mine did.

@trueeast party scene is good if you know upperclassmen/are a girl, kinda sad if you’re a guy and don’t have that many connections

@alleinad, it always changes, fitzaga would be nice as it’s the closest to your classes/cafeteria, but thats it. i guess the worst would be fenwick since it’s the farthest but fenwick 4 last year was crazy haha

@mosaicmural yeah, BC gets speakers, but nobody that famous… i think last year james franco debuted a movie here or something, and then there was this fashion guy that all the girls were obsessed about seeing. as for clubs/bars, i don’t know any teen clubs, but you should have a fake id if you wanna go out. as for research i have no clue

Q: what is the party scene for freshmen like?
A: Not bad. If you’re a girl it’s great. If you know upperclassmen it’s also pretty good. Otherwise, it’s a little more difficult to find parties. All the more reason to join clubs to get to know upperclassmen!

Q:What’s the best freshman dorm to live in? I’m in Xavier on upper
A: I would probably say that the most ‘ideal’ would be gonzaga or fitzpatrick just because it’s closer to everything. xavier is great! it’s really nice inside, i spent a lot of time in xavier.

Q:@Beach17, I got into honors housing, but I’ve come to discover that some people in Medeiros aren’t even part of the honors program. A: It seems that there are a lot of girls that the hp has a hard time finding for honors housing freshman year. but the thing that happened last year was that the non-honors girls hung out with each other and the honors girls hung out with each other just because theyhad different lifestyles–and liked to go out a bit more than honors girls?

Q:Where do you go specifically in Boston? 18+ clubs? concerts? plays? Harvard speaker series?
A: I went to see a lot of movies at fenway. went to several concerts at symphony hall, went to newbury street for shopping all the time, went to MIT for a party, went to listen to a harvard speaker (survivor from the holocaust). I wish I went to more of hte harvard speaker series and more 18+ clubs. the problem with the clubs though is that the T shuts down at 12:40am so if you stay out later you need to grab a cab, and cabs are just so unrealiable in boston.

Q:Speaking of which…Does BC ever get speakers? Just for small gatherings, not the author of the book we’re reading
A: Yeah, we have some once in a while. we had peggy noonan one time (i wish i went, but i had another commitment), james franco was promoting a movie he was in written by a bc prof, clinton kelly (LOL @fraire’s comment) from tlc’s what not to wear because he’s a bc alum–part of hte career center’s speaker series or something. we do have a lot. they sometimes dont advertise it very well so you have to go looking for them or be on the lookout on facebook events.

Q:What kind of research opportunities are there?
A: You should probably ask the department you’re interested in instead of me haha sorry!

Q:So I found out that I was assigned a quad… I put this down as my first choice (was I really lucky or did I get it cause no one else wants it?) but I was disappointed because I didn’t look at the 3D rendering until after I was placed in one. A: are you on upper? the quads on upper are huge!!! they’re so cool. sometimes it’s a huge room, other times it’s like an entry way where the desks and tv are, and then two quasi bedrooms to the left and right of the entryway. it all depends on how you decide to arrange the room, too.

so what do all the freshmen dudes who dont know upperclassmen do?

How is gonzaga? thats the dorm I’m going too!
