How do I know what books each class requires?

google boston college bookstore, click on Textbooks…

@trueeast: you can get them now here: efollett;
I wouldn’t recommend it until after class starts though, because you won’t need every book. plus even the bookstore won’t buy some back. what I do is i buy them as i go along

@kcombs nope, well the shaw house has a kitchen but you can’t really use it unless you’re shaw lmao. in your dorm there will be vending machines and that’s it… unless you get a fridge / microwave

@cocobanana nope but i would recommend those sticky hooks

or just tape

Hey guys! I’m super excited for freshman year to start. In preparation, I’ve spent some time looking at BC’s list of clubs and organizations. I’m feeling kind of overwhelmed because there are soooo many options and, as much as I want to, I know that I can’t do them all…

Do you have any advice as to how many or what organizations I should join? As of right now, I would love to do a club sport, something (or two things involving volunteering, some sort of international club (I’m planning on studying Hispanic Studies so this area is very interesting to me…), and an A Capella group. I’m trying to convince myself that this is practical…is there any way???

I already know what sport I plan on taking part in… so that’s not a problem… but I have some questions about the other areas…

I’ve noticed that there are several A Capella groups at BC (for males, I think it’s The Heightsman, BC Dynamics, Bostonians, and Acoustics…I think one is all males and the other three are co-ed, but that really doesn’t matter to me…). Does anybody know the differences between them? How do I decide which one to try out for?

I think it would be super cool to become a volunteer EMT at BC. However, the EMT class is 16 hours a week for like nine weeks (4 hours tues/thurs, 8 hours sunday…) Would this be practical (with or even without) other activities, or would this be way too crazy for someone trying to become accustom to college life (and pre-med)?

I’ve found a TON of volunteer groups that I find interesting… I know Appalacia is the most popular and I LOVE the idea of being able to do more service trips, but do you have any other suggestions?

Sorry this is all over the place… that’s kind of how I’m feeling right now ;)

I was wondering how you sign up for discussion sections for microeconomics. My professor emailed me and said we had to sign up for one prior to September 6, but when I went on BC UIS, it said that I needed deparment permission.

Hey thanks to the previous response!

I was wondering if the teachers for gen chem + chem discussions had to be the same.
For instance, I have wolfamn for gen chem… would i need to register for his discussion class or can i just be in mcfadden’s class?

Thanks in advance!

Q: EC activities
A: Sounds great! No, I think it’s good to keep yourself very busy during the school year–I think students do better in school when they have to force themselves to manage their time because they have a lot of commitments. But don’t pack on too much. BUT at the same time it’s good to try everything you want to try your freshman year that way you can weed out what you want to concentrate/maybe take on a leadership position in and what activities arent suited for you. The Heightsmen is an all male a capella group (they’re soo good! i love them) Yep, dynamics, bostonians, and acoustics are all co-ed. The kinds of music each group sings are all slightly different from each other. if you dont get accepted to the heightsmen–i would say go for dynamics or acoustics. but all have great singers. the emt hours aren’t that bad. my friend has a commitment to the heights (20 hours/week) is in honors, pre-med, and still did emt and totally loved it. i would say do it–but it’s also something that can be put off until your soph/junior/senior year so i wouldnt rush it your freshman year especially with all of the other activities you want to take part in. For volunteer-appalacia is very popular but the reason why i quit was you have to ‘raise’ money, and i hate asking my family/friends for money. but if you’re ok with it, do it. an awesome way to make friends. you’ll get the chance to talk to different clubs on activities day. also be warned that almost all clubs require you to fill out an application. some are really intense, some aren’t. just…be warned & dont let it scare you away.

Q:I was wondering how you sign up for discussion sections for microeconomics. My professor emailed me and said we had to sign up for one prior to September 6, but when I went on BC UIS, it said that I needed deparment permission.
A: Huh. I’ve never encountered that. All of my discussion sections were like on the first day of class, my professor would hand out a sheet of paper with all of the possible sections and i’d pick one that fit my schedule and i would automatically be in the system. But, I guess you can do it through uis. so, just add one of the sections to your schedule via uis. you’ll know if it wont work when on the main screen of uis it’ll say you’re not allowed to do this because of that dept permission.huh. that’s weird. email your professor.

Q:I was wondering if the teachers for gen chem + chem discussions had to be the same.

A: yes. same professor.

Do all econ classes require a discussion class? I didn’t see anything about a corequisite for Micro besides calc, which requires a discussion I think.

Q: Do all econ classes require a discussion class? I didn’t see anything about a corequisite for Micro besides calc, which requires a discussion I think.
A: Yes. principles of micro and macro both do. your professor will tell you about it when classes start

Random but from college pr0wler, it said that most of the guys are short… what is your take on that?

I heard that BC students have to pay for BC football tickets. Is this true? If so how much are they? And is it the same with basketball and hockey?

Thanks

Thanks, crackerjack!

Just a couple additional things as I’m trying to determine the what a Capella group to join…

Why would you suggest the heightsman over all others?

Are there any differences between the “types” of people in each group (I don’t know how else to say it… but is one group made up of like really studious kids while others predominantly spend their time partying?)

Are there differences between level of dedication of the groups (I looked on each groups website… the bostonians seemed to travel a lot while some of the others stayed local)?

What is the most popular group among the general BC populace?

Any other difference you can possibly think of would be great!!!

Thanks in advance!

Q: Do all econ classes require a discussion class? I didn’t see anything about a corequisite for Micro besides calc, which requires a discussion I think.

Actually, the only econ classes that require a discussion class are the large lecture hall type classes. If you do not have to have a discussion class, you likely chose a relatively small class (~30-40 people).

Q: Random but from college pr0wler, it said that most of the guys are short… what is your take on that?

I’m 5’9", but I felt awkwardly short at BC. Most of the guys I know and see walking around campus are taller than me by a couple of inches at least.

Q: I heard that BC students have to pay for BC football tickets. Is this true? If so how much are they? And is it the same with basketball and hockey?

You have to pay for football, basketball, and hockey. Football prices are ~$20 a game. You’ll get notifications on basketball and hockey tickets later in the semester.

Q: Why would you suggest the heightsman over all others?
A: yes! it’s definitely the most loved a capella group on campus and arguably the most talented. but that’s my opinion.

Q: Are there any differences between the “types” of people in each group (I don’t know how else to say it… but is one group made up of like really studious kids while others predominantly spend their time partying?)
A: No, not really. the only difference is the kinds of music they sing. but there’s a lot of diversity within each individual group. supposedly everyone gets along really well. and honestly, everyone will accept you, even if you’re slightly different from the others.

Q: Are there differences between level of dedication of the groups (I looked on each groups website… the bostonians seemed to travel a lot while some of the others stayed local)?
A: Yes, i would assume there would be, but i can’t help you out here the best way is to just talk to the groups on activities day and get a feel of what they’re like just by talking to them. even during auditions, observe how they interact with you and that’ll get you a better feel of which group is ‘for you.’

Q: What is the most popular group among the general BC populace?
A: popular a capella group? heightsmen. but they all have really high concert attendance rates. sometimes they’ll group up with another a capella group on campus and do a mixed concert–those are always really fun!

Q: Any other difference you can possibly think of would be great!!!
A: I can’t really think of other differences. I’m really just telling you all of this from what i’ve seen at concerts and what my friends (who are in these groups) have told me. all the a capella groups are really fantastic and they’re a lot of fun to listen to. So my advice would be to just talk to the members on activities day–decide which group(s) you want to audition for and just let it go from there. if they think you’re a good fit for them, there ya go! sorry im not very helpful here… Oh! well, try youtube-ing each of the groups! that might give you a better idea of what they’re like!

is it possible to switch housing assignments?

What is the height of the dorm beds? How much stuff can you fit underneath? In the conditions for residency, it says that beds may only be raised with RackRaiser; is this true/enforced? I noticed that the bookstore sells other, shorter bed raisers.

Do people normally use the provided desk chair or bring another chair (such as a swively one) from home?

Q: is it possible to switch housing assignments?
A:Yes and no. You can always submit a request to reslife, but I believe most changes happen around winter break. So you’ll most likely be stuck where you are for a while.

A: The frame is actually adjustable, and ranges from the floor to about 4 feet high. You can fit a few boxes, a fridge, and a couple of pieces of luggage. You probably wont lack space. I believe risers are only allowed in certain dorms, so I would check ahead of time to see if they are sanctioned in your dorm. It is only enforced when ResLife does an inspection of the room, generally once per semester and once during winter break.

Q: Do people normally use the provided desk chair or bring another chair (such as a swively one) from home?
A: I know quite a few people who do it. It shouldn’t be an issue.

love this thread! thanks for the helpful answers!!

my question: While at campus, I heard talk of a shuttle that takes students to the T-stop near the reservoir. Is this true? Where else does it go? and how long is the bus ride?

I’m going to work out daily and I want to know about the weight room/plex. Does it have good excersising machines? weights? I heard bad things about it.

Q: While at campus, I heard talk of a shuttle that takes students to the T-stop near the reservoir. Is this true? Where else does it go? and how long is the bus ride?
A: Yep! There are two main bus lines. the first is the newton campus bus line–which basically takes you to newton campus and back (various stops in newton campus). the second one is the chestnut hill campus bus line which stops at the res, several places along the off-campus housing route, the major stops along main campus (library, mac, robsham theater, main gate, etc…). it depends on where you’re coming from but usually the bus ride to the res stop takes about 5-15 minutes.

Q: I’m going to work out daily and I want to know about the weight room/plex. Does it have good excersising machines? weights? I heard bad things about it.
A: yeah, it’s not the best, but it’s tolerable. haha the thing about the plex is that it’s just really old…but the machines aren’t terrible/old themselves, but they’re not the best machines either (like they wont be what you’d see in yawkey center)
