Rising Sophomore taking questions

so housing originally put me in a forced triple, but then they sent me an email that said I could detriple and move to newton. I decided to move. Do you think this was a smart choice? and now i’m in a double, but i’m the only one in it. is it possible for me to have a double to myself unless the spot gets filled?

thanks for all the helpful info here
My son is assigned to a natural triple, the online assignment gives specific bed numbers, does this really mean that the beds in the room are already assigned or does the early bird get the worm?

Had anyone taken “Intermediate Intensive Spanish for Proficiency”? I tested out of the language proficiency requirement already but I don’t want to lose my Spanish…Is it a bad idea to take this class? I’ve already looked up the professor and he has an “easier” reputation on PEPs. Also, the class only meets T/TH 9-? I thought that the language intensive (6 credits) are supposed to be everyday

So did I do something wrong by not signing up for a discussion class for Econ? I’m pretty sure my friend who is in my same econ class and section didn’t sign up for one either.

Also, how are the facilities on Newton? I’ve heard the food is quite good, but what about the gym there? Am I going to have to go over to the Plex everytime I work out?

PS - I’d just like to say again how helpful this all is, almost 21000 thread views!

@georgie33, as a former upper campuser, i would have rather stuck to upper (at the end of the year you get like $1,000 back too) and the bus would’ve been a pain… but seeing as how i never had to take it, i couldnt really judge that. and it’s possible but i doubt you’ll be living alone

@dawntom, no it’s whoever gets there first will pick. which will probably be any people attending orientation 7

@mosaicmural actually the class meets every day, mtwthf at 9. if you go to the course offering schedule on portal it will have one line that says MWF 9 and then the next line says TTH9. but if you’re too lazy and want to see it for yourself: [RL 181 Intensive Intermediate Spanish for Oral Proficiency (Fall: 6)](http://www.bc.edu/crs/rl/course/rl18100.shtml)

@bronovan for econ, you don’t sign up for a discussion until class starts. like when you’re actually in your econ lecture. you’ll get some slip of paper with all the times and then mark which times would work for your schedule. as for newton, the food is good, never been to the gym there. if i remember correctly its just like workout rooms in the dorms

Q: so housing originally put me in a forced triple, but then they sent me an email that said I could detriple and move to newton. I decided to move. Do you think this was a smart choice? and now i’m in a double, but i’m the only one in it. is it possible for me to have a double to myself unless the spot gets filled?
A: No. I think it was a good decision in a way. at the end of the year you’ll get to know more people really well since newton dorms are really small. yes, it’s possible you’ll have a dorm room to yourself for the first semester, but they’ll likely put in another transfer student in your room for the spring. if not, hey! you’re lucky!

Q: My son is assigned to a natural triple, the online assignment gives specific bed numbers, does this really mean that the beds in the room are already assigned or does the early bird get the worm?
A: Nope! I had a natural triple and it was a first come first serve basis unless he talks it out with his roommates before the move-in date.

Q:So did I do something wrong by not signing up for a discussion class for Econ? I’m pretty sure my friend who is in my same econ class and section didn’t sign up for one either.

Also, how are the facilities on Newton? I’ve heard the food is quite good, but what about the gym there? Am I going to have to go over to the Plex everytime I work out?
A: No, your professor should’ve said something but if he/she didn’t dont worry about it, they’ll repeat it again when classes start. do not worry about discussion sections yet. the food is a lot better on newton (they even have a milkshake machine! how cool!!) the gym sort of sucks though on newton so most people come to the plex anyway.

Do girls ever bring totes to class, or do most people use backpacks? Thanks :)

I am a girl, and I use a tote bag for my books… though some of my friends who have more textbooks use backpacks. I would get a backpack, however, for trips to the gym and for trips to the library. It’s a bit of a walk from freshman dorms and it’s easier to carry all your books plus your laptop in a backpack vs a purse type thing. Also, when it rains, which is a lot, it’s easier to have a backpack.

^agree
both. i like using a backpack but i just bought myself a tote today. i’d say it’s split even.

my roommate told me that her mom said that you can only have a microwave at bc if it is a microfridge…is this true? or can you have a fridge and a separate microwave?

Microwaves are allowed as long as they only require a standard 110-volt outlet and are low wattage (1000 watts or less). Most of the dorm-size microwaves are 900 watts.

Are there any ironing materials in the dorms or laundry areas?

Q: Are there any ironing materials in the dorms or laundry areas?
A: Not that I know of. I bought a tiny, portable steamer from Bed, Bath and Beyond. it was like $30. Totally worth it.

How are the BC bookstore’s textbook sell back rates? Are they decent? Or do they offer $20 for a book you bought from them brand new at $120? I know a lot of it has to do with the store’s S/D.

A: How are the BC bookstore’s textbook sell back rates? Are they decent? Or do they offer $20 for a book you bought from them brand new at $120? I know a lot of it has to do with the store’s S/D.
A: Yeah. it’s totally dependent on whether or not the bookstore is in high demand for it or not. be careful though because sometimes say, if you bought a chemistry book for gen chem and want to sell it back at the end of the year, sometimes the bookstore wont take it, will give you peanuts for it because the department decided to use a new publisher/edition. So there really is no guarantee. Half of my friends rent, the other half buys them online at amazon/ebay/barnes&noble and there’s this organization on campus that buys back every book and will give you cash on the spot. The bookstore will almost never give back the full price of the text.

Knew I wouldn’t get full price, but was hoping maybe half. These textbooks written by professors are killing me. Can’t find the Perspectives I textbook by Braman any cheaper than the BC bookstore, and can’t find the Portico book for CSOM ANYWHERE else besides the BC bookstore. Thanks though, I’ll continue my scavenger hunt.

How are the group classes at the plex? I think I want to try a couple, but do you have to sign up in advance at all?

Also, how big are the bathrooms that come with triples?

Is Courage to Know only offered in the fall?

Q: How are the group classes at the plex? I think I want to try a couple, but do you have to sign up in advance at all?
A: Pretty good. Yeah some you have to sign up on the day of, others you sign up for in advance. The information’s on the Plex’s website! :)

Q: Also, how big are the bathrooms that come with triples?
A: A decent size. I dont know the exact measurements, but it has a shower, a shower curtain, a sink, mirror, toilet, a cabinet behind the mirror and a cabinet under the sink. Triples bathrooms are mostly the same size.

Q: Is Courage to Know only offered in the fall?
A: Yes, I think so. the point is for it to help you get adjusted during your first semester.

Do we need any books on the first day? (ex: notebooks, folders, etc…)

Thanks in advance!
