Rising Sophomore taking questions

How Competitive are the A Cappella groups? I really want to join the heightsmen but it seems like they only take a few people each year… any idea how many people try out?

hey crackerjack, where do you take exams for big lecture classes? Do you just take them in the lecture hall? I have a class in Devlin 008 but I feel like taking the exam there would be really uncomfortable and conducive to cheating…

How nice of you to devote the time to answer all of these BC questions! Any advice for a transfer student? Any particular contacts that would be helpful to cultivate? Anything you can think of to help is so appreciated!

@coco It depends on the class. Some professors schedule exams to be taken in discussion groups, taken in the actual lecture hall, or split (half in 008 half elsewhere).

Q: where do you take exams for big lecture classes? Do you just take them in the lecture hall? I have a class in Devlin 008 but I feel like taking the exam there would be really uncomfortable and conducive to cheating…
A: Yep. Unfortunately, Devlin 008 classes have their finals in devlin 008–sometimes (most times in my experience) they split the class up and half stayed in devlin 008, the other half went to mcguinn 121 to take their finals. I agree–it’s definitely uncomfortable since the desk things are so tiny, but it works. And as for the cheating, yeah it’s really easy to but I guess BC just trusts you wont. A lot of times though, professors and TAs will walk up&down the stairs to try and prevent this.

Q:Any advice for a transfer student? Any particular contacts that would be helpful to cultivate? Anything you can think of to help is so appreciated!
A: Welcome to BC! Um I’m guessing by this point in the semester you’ve at least established a small group of friends. I think that’s the most important part–because after that, people will introduce you to other people and it’s like you’ve been at BC for forever. Definitely join the clubs that interest you, it’s another great way to meet new friends. Regarding contacts…hm. If you have any small classes, get to know the professor really well. They’re really great resources!!! (You’d be surprised.) Hope you enjoy your time at BC!:)

Good luck on midterms, everyone!!!

hi crackerjaack92! I’m looking to study nursing, and i was wondering how selective the Connel School of Nursing at BC is?
Also, I haven’t taken AP BIO or AP CHEM at all, (however I have taken ADV. BIO, and ADV. Human Anatomy&Phisiology) and instead have chosen the opposite route (AP LIT, LANG, GOV, U.S HISTORY, PSYCH) because I love learning those subjects, and the AP science courses are four hours long (2 periods) and I wouldn’t have been able to fit them into my schedule along witht the other AP courses, required courses, and electives that I love doing (dance, theatre and Student government) Because nursing is sooo science centered, do you think my lack of science AP’s will hurt my chances of admission? I believe the skills I’ve learned in the arts and history/writing make me stand out and could in turn, help me in nursing. But I don’t think BC would see it that way. Advice?

Ummmmm. I think because you went on a different path in high school and took the respective classes, it might be harder to get into cson. maybe apply for a&s and if you get in try and transfer into the nursing school (although i’m not sure how competitive it is to transfer. that would be my best guess, but also dont quote me on it. definitely call up an admissions officer and ask them! good luck

Lois: Apply to the school of nursing. BC’s admission rates are similar across the board and it is MUCH harder to transfer once at BC. You should apply to the school of nursing, and while your course load might not reflect a science heavy one you can reflect about that in your essay. BC is a Jesuit school that loves its CORE and if you can bring that about in your essay you stand a great chance!

I’m from Rwanda, Africa and have been living in the U.S since I was two…I was going to write an essay reflecting the struggles of maintaing my identity while being immeresed in two different cultures…but should I, iMac15, just write the essay you suggested? Idk, it’s something that I’m struggling with. Because I know BC likes diversity, but my sciences don’t reflect the typical nursing hopeful.

If Nursing is your first choice, apply to Nursing. Ask your GC to explain your schedule issues in his/her rec. That way YOU don’t make it look like an excuse. IMO, the lack of AP sciences is not an issue. What could be an issue is the lack of ECs and commitment to health care/community service. Health care adcoms need to feel comfortable that students have dipped their toe in the water and know what they are getting into – and won’t faint at the first sight of blood.

All colleges love diversity, so such an essay can be well received., particularly at a school like BC.

Good luck.

Thank you so much for that suggestion bluebayou, I think that’s what I’ll do! I’m actually scheduled to volunteer at a hospital soon so hopefully that shows my dedication to the healthcare and I’m also NHS VP, we’re developing a lot of new service projects and I’m organizing a blood drive next week! So hopefully my EC’s show my commitment. Thank you again!

does BC release all their EA applicant letters at once or sporadically after November 1st? I applied a while ago and i know to be patient and that i will get a response before Christmas, but i hate the waiting game haha!

mchs, all of the EA decisions will be sent out in mid-December.

question- do you know anything about the summer seminars? reviews on them/best ones to go on/is it worth it?? thanks

question- do you know anything about the summer seminars? reviews on them/best ones to go on/is it worth it?? thanks

answer: like summer classes? Or seminars abroad? Can you clarify

This is actually the most amazing thing I have ever seen! So many great questions & great answer!

I’m high school senior that applied to LSOE Early Action, ive looked at other threads and what i’ve guessed is that people will start getting decisions next friday (12/16). Is this accurate? Is there any truth behind the rumors that they send out the acceptances/deferments/denials in groups? Like if I don’t hear back the first day it’s good/bad news? Also, I heard that your agora portal switches over and says stuff like “pay deposit, etc” if you get in… is that true? should i check there before i get a letter or is that unreliable? I cant wait to hear back! BC is definitely my first choice and I would LOVE to get in there before christmas!

Hey! From what I’ve heard, acceptance letters have been sent out! Congrats to all who are officially Eagles!

(Sorry this is so late. Finals week was just…awful.)

P.S. Yeah, for the most part it’s true that people who have been accepted have the extra “tab” that asks to pay the deposit.

If any of you BC '16ers have any questions, feel free to ask!
