I recently moved into a new housing for the school year in some house on 24th st.

I never had a roach problem before although I was in the city except for maybe seeing one waterbug once a semester. (school housing)

yesterday I went to the bathroom and saw one roach. Then I went out into the kitchen and there were 5 roaches on the sink. They didn't even budge when the lights turned on.

I talked to the owner and he said he was calling pest control but I have a crazy crazy phobia of bugs. I can't stand butterflies. I'm literally going crazy and I can't take showers because I'm afraid of the bathroom. I'm afraid to cook, touch my stuff, walk, sleep.

I'm also allergic to some stuff (not sure what it is) so I really would not live in such an environment. Do you think it would be enough to break a lease and get my deposit back? The lease is for one year (or 9 months if I turn in rent on time) with one month's rent as deposit.

california's civil code 1941 states that:
(f) Building, grounds, and appurtenances at the time of the
commencement of the lease or rental agreement, and all areas under
control of the landlord, kept in every part clean, sanitary, and free
from all accumulations of debris, filth, rubbish, garbage, rodents,
and vermin.

I've only been there for a day or two but I'm already about to go insane. What should I do?????

I really can't mentally live here I'm about to absolutely go insane. I REALLY RARELY CRY but I called my mother crying like a little girl this morning this is how bad my phobia is.

You see roaches a lot here in the SW part of the states due to the warmer weather. I had some roaches earlier this summer (the smaller ones) and started to see them regularly before I put out some of those roach traps out and within a day or two I stopped seeing them and haven’t seen one since then!

Pest control should take care of them just as quickly I imagine.

In regards to your allergy which seems unrelated, I can’t comment on the ability to break the lease or not.

I really don’t think you would be able to break your lease, since the landlord is taking appropriate steps to take care of the roach problem.

When is the pest control guy coming? Do you have a friend you can stay with until pest control comes? Have you considered buying some roach traps to kill them? Combat traps work great & are very popular in Hawaii.

**You really need to consider talking to someone at USC about your bug phobia tho–there should be some counselors there that will work with you. It will help you no matter what you decide to do about housing. **

There are tons of roaches in Hawaii, unfortunately due to our nice warm, moist climate. Most folks here are able to deal with them and don’t get overly excited about seeing a few from time to time, even in the best hotels & nicest homes.

I actually talked to the landlord and he said he’ll look for someone since school just started. He’s been very kind so far and it seems if I can’t get out this semester he’s going to get someone at least next semester.

Bug phobia is not something I can cure no matter what. I used to live in apartment full of bugs when I was a child and it certainly has not helped, probably made it worse.

It’s not just one roach. They are all over the cabinets, all over the sink, the floor during the night.

ALSO The manager lives in the backyard in a trailer. That’s weird, isn’t it? O_O
i heard its because cars and stuff got broken into and he watches the stuff but it’s still weird as heck.

I CAN deal with one in a semester. NOT 5-10 in one morning. I’ve lived in texas and California for a while where I used to see them often. Just not that often in my own home.

I have combat traps all over my room but really this is not how I want to spend my senior year.

I think you should go to USC housing and explain your situation to see if they can help you get out of the lease if the landlord doesn’t correct the roach problem. Hopefully, they can find you other clean USC housing. In the meantime, I suggest buying a bottle of clear vinegar at the grocery store (not flavored vinegar) and mix a little with hot water to mop your floors and wipe your counter tops. Vinegar helps repel bugs. Be careful not to use too much vinegar because you don’t want to sting your eyes.

Since your landlord is actually contacting pest control, that isn’t enough to get out of the lease. I will warn you though, when they do come out, they will likely fog, which is very effective, but will drive the roaches out before they die. I would not recommend staying in the unit for a day or two after treatment as they will be everywhere.

Also, pest control will likely need to come out a couple of times to kill the bugs that maybe haven’t hatched yet.

I don’t believe USC can assist you in getting out of your lease other than referring you to the city, however once you do get out you can check to see if they have space in university housing.

^ like I said the land lord is letting me out either this week or at least next semester, depending if somebody wants the room.

The room is really cheap for a single (575 with all utilities) and the room itself is clean and spotless…without crazy roaches. it’s just the common areas because people are messy! they also gave me pretty good furniture. If anybody wants the room contact me lol. They are getting rid of the roaches this week and spraying every two months.
