Ahh roaches

I just moved into a house for the school year.

EW EW EW
ROACHES. I saw one. I thought perhaps it wasn't a roach....

Next night I went into the bathroom. Saw another one. Ran out to the kitchen.
5 roaches in plain sight next to the sink.
THey wouldn't even budge with the lights on.

I mean whenever I see the big ones I presume they are from outside but the small ones makes me think they are living here...

I have a crazy phobia of bugs (I run away from a butterfly) and I can't sit properly. I keep on looking around the room because I think I'll see a roach or something in my room. I put roach traps all over my room (10 traps in one room) because they do work but if it's really messy in the kitchen, they'll just waltz into my room.

There was a reason this place was super cheap, sigh should've known. Just didn't even occur to me places had roaches since I've been living in pretty good places so far. I just wanted a single for my senior year because of my senior project. BUT REALLY I rather live with one extra person than 100 roaches as my roommate.

I'm going to lose my 575 dollar deposit but at this point I'm about to jump out of my window.

Also the 'manager' of this place lives in the backyard in his trailer. WHAT THE.

I wish the school housing would've just taken me. sigh.

Roaches are ubiquitous in any city.

Speak with the landlord. I believe pests are something they are required to take care of.

Call one of those pest control places and see if they have a free estimate. Dodson is good if they have a center in your area.

I did, I think he’s calling pest control soon but I’m like terrified in the mean time.
I think I’m going to move out even if I blow the deposit (like 575) my mom seems to be ok with it although I feel really terrible about blowing her money since we are on a really tight budget… sigh.

I lived in LA so far but didn’t really have any bug problems except occasional roaches walking in once a semester. 5 in one night is not ok.

Also when I move out, they’ll latch onto all my stuff. o_O AND GO WITH ME WHEREEVER I GO…

Don’t be so quick to run! First find out how thoroughly they can get rid of them before you make any big decisions. Go stay with a friend for a couple nights until the pest control people come.

If you do decide to move out, and he doesn’t remove the roaches, then you should be entitled to your deposit back since he isn’t upholding his end of the deal.

BTW, I know I can’t just run out on when I have a lease. Roaches aren’t good enough reason to break one is it? I can’t go back there, I’m seriously about to cry.

I understand how you feel. I would seriously be afraid to sleep if I knew there were that many roaches in my house. They could crawl all over me in my sleep! D:

Haha, I’ve broken my lease for dumber reasons.

But since dealing with pests are in his list of responsibilities, you should be able to break it without any trouble on your end. However, you still have to give him a chance to fix it before deciding to leave.

Want to know something scary, OP? I once walked into my kitchen in the house I grew up in, turned the light on, looked into the next room, which was still dark, and the carpet was literally moving. I was so scared and creeped out I couldn’t even bring myself to flip that room’s light switch on to see what was going on. THE CARPET WAS MOVING! I fled the kitchen and vowed to never go in the kitchen at night again.

…

Lethal Fairy, you made me stare at my carpet for a good minute. Yuuuuckkk!!! I hate bugs so much, possibly even more than you. They also scare the **** out of me. If i see one, I actually squeal and run away. But it could be worse… occasionally around the house i’ve seen house centipedes. they’re 100 times scarier than roaches :(:frowning: ahhhh new york

In some countries, roaches are considered a delicacy.

Well, just for your information, we don’t have roaches in the north. I had never even seen one until I was in Spain.

They had roaches on a stick in China.

You can call the LA county health dept to ask for clarification on living ‘roach free’ in a rental. Could also call the city Housing Dept for regulations on breaking lease for infestations. For now stay over with a friend while your unit is getting fumigated and pick up some roach motels at Target. If you have any residual visitors they’ll get stuck in the ‘hotel’ and you can have someone who is a little braver than you throw it out when it’s full.

Well I don’t think it’s just me, I mean I’m getting used to the bugs but I still think its a health hazard. I REALLY WOULD RATHER NOT GET USED TO LIVING WITH THEM.

They are all over the kitchen! In the sinks, on the dishes, between the dishes, around the trashcan, around kitchen utensils, etc.

I cook to save money and stay healthy rather than eating out (I ate out like once, twice a week last school year) but I can’t cook at all obviously when I don’t even want to be around the kitchen.

AND I mentioned the manager lives in the backyard in a trailer right? THAT’S SO SHADY.

uyulove: You are lucky those are the small ones and not the big 1-2" ones! They are the type that tend to be found going towards food or water sources so if you put out a dozen of those roach traps I mentioned in your other thread, they should dissipate pretty quick when they all die off.

That is gross, uyulove! And the manager living in the backyard is too. Yucky.

You need to get on the ball. First, go in your backyard and knock on the managers trailer and hand deliver a little maintenance request to him about the roaches and make sure you keep a copy. It is very important to do things like that in writing. Then, call the health department and ask them how long the rule is for a landlord tending to a major roach issue…all maintenance requests of that ilk have a timeline. After that, just hope for the best or move. I know where I live (Tennessee), if something really serious happens, like if the ac breaks in July, you put the request in writing and if it is not fixed in thirty days, then the lease is null and void.

If you get this taken care of nicely (which I really hope you do). Then, you pm me and I will give you all the bug control tips I know. I live in the south, so we just kinda naturally have bugs during some parts of the year because of the weather.

I think the landlord is saying if he finds another person who is looking for a place he’ll break the lease. He seems like a really nice person (thank god) so even if I get stuck living here for a semester at least he’ll take care of business. The bug people are coming tomorrow and he said they’ll come every two weeks.
