Robert C. Byrd Scholarship

gymmom2007, I know in OH they told us not to expect the money in time to make the fall payment. I think they get around this problem by sending the check to the student at home for them to figure out how to deal with. Hopefully it’s better in Minn.

Thanks so much, Gymmom2007! That definitely puts me at ease. =]

For VA, the re-certification form for the Byrd scholarship was sent out a couple of weeks ago. The form needs to be sent to the university/college and they have to fill it out then send it back to DOE in VA. VA will then send a check to the university. Last year, the check did not get to the university until after tuition was due so it was deposited into our son’s checking account by the university since his account was paid in full.

when do we find out abt this scholarship?
my GC told me to sign something. does that mean i get it?

Each state has it’s own nomination process (usually a limited number of nominees per HS) and different selection process, so you need to post your state. Are you at Columbia? So NY? But GC makes me think you are in HS? So which is your home state?

i was accepted to columbia and im high school still
and my home state is NY.
whats ny’s nomination process?

Columbia…you’re accepted to Columbia and you can’t look up the process for your state? As to “did I get it”?..I don’t believe they’re awarded this early…this is a very old thread, as you can see. I know our home state cut off date isn’t even until the end of April.

I don’t know NYs rules, but you could simply Google it and likely find it

Here is the info for NY State:

[Byrd Scholarship | NYSFAAA](http://www.nysfaaa.org/docs/student_family/what_is_finaid/byrd.html)

Since I’m a senior who has a good shot at receiving this, I’ve been following the news and know that this scholarship is currently on the new budget’s chopping block. However, I know it’s been there before, too. Does anybody who’s seen it in this position before have any thoughts as to if it will continue, and any bets on whether it’ll actually make it through the next 4 years?:)

My guess is that as long as Byrd is in the Senate it will stay. But he’s pretty darn old, 93 this year!

My son’s guidance dept. called today to get “permission” to use his info to nominate his for this scholarship so at least the application etc. is still online and counselors are still being asked for nominations.

Yea, at least they’re still collecting info, that’s a good sign. I’d be really disappointed if it was cut because when I was nominated they showed my state’s guidelines and it’d be literally impossible for me to not receive this. And they don’t really make the students do anything. Good luck to your son!

Can you remember some of the guidelines for your state? I’m just curious…all I found was good grades, scores, EC’s…pretty generic stuff.

Our state’s only qualification was based on ACT score (but i don’t remember the exact number…) but then the application was terrible…

7 copies of:
official transcript
2 essays
ridiculous forms that had to be in the right format or they wouldn’t look at your app
two letters of rec

and all stapled and perfect and sent to Topeka

Most people I know who got nominated for the schol. didn’t apply b/c the application was too difficult. State just sent letters to anyone w/ a good ACT in the fall, then set the due date in Feb. so we’d all forget about applying anyways. most teachers told me not to apply, but i stressed myself out to do all the paperwork in time. didn’t matter how many applied per school, but congressional districts seemed to matter. hope i get it (but my cong. district is the most populated & smallest & smartest)

Is it still open? And those anyone know the requirements for GA?

Do you actually have to be nominated for this scholarship? I just found it online for PA and was going to apply.

Anybody know the cut off scores for PA? I was reading the older half of this thread and people were talking about minimum scores to get the scholarship.

To everybody who just posted, it all depends on the state. Some deadlines have passed, some have not. Some require schools to nominate students, some have an open application. Some have a holistic process, some are purely numbers based. For my state, each school gets to nominate one person, and the deadline has passed. The formula is UW GPA x250 + ACT (or converted SAT) x 3.

Most have some info about the selection process online. Just google robert byrd scholarship _______ (state) and you should be able to find it. Otherwise look on your state’s dpi website.

My d has this out of FL. Each school nominates one kid, depending on who has the combined ACT score and unweighted GPA. Then the state figures out how much money they get, pay off those kids who are continuing as Byrd Scholars (you are eligible for four years, assuming you meet the criteria while in college), and then whatever is left over they start paying out to new kids in order until they are out of money, essentially.

zebes

I just got notification that I received this scholarship. From the letter, it appears that it is funded through this year. It states “you will receive the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship in the amount of $1500.”

Later, it says "The scholarship may be renewable for three years after the initial award on the condition that adequate funding is provided by the federal government. These funds are provided by the Higher Education and Opportunity Act of 2008. Many program rescissions and revisions are occurring at the federal level. We maintain close contact with Washington on this important issue.

So, I think that we will get the money this fall. The next few are the ones up in the air. Otherwise they would say something like “pending funding from the federal government,” right??

I know my state notifies really early, so good luck to those who are gonna be waiting it out awhile longer!
