Just got paper mail confirmation that PA’s PHEAA received my application. Apparantly, they divide the funding equally on the county level (good if you live in sparse, unpopulated county… unlike myself). Won’t know if I get it until the earliest being June 30th. All it really asked for GPA/SAT. Mine’s 4.3 (~3.9 raw) / 1800. Wonder if I have a chance. Hmm. They claim winners are selected randomly, they just confirm that you’re eligible when reporting scores.

I know my school let like the top 20 kids or so apply for them, myself being 17th, out of a class of a little over 400. It was rather shady getting called to the Guidance Office right after homeroom one day… and then I saw all the elite ones viciously filling out their application. Of course I was last person to get there, haha.

cawrd, i was sure i read somewhere that the notice may come out may 7th but now i cant find anything saying that?? do you remember any specific date?

I have the cover letter from the 2008 application which says it would be announced May 7 (of 2008). I think last year’s notice came out later but I don’t know for sure. Our guidance counselor didn’t provide a cover letter this year and so I have no idea when it’s supposed to be announced. Let us know when you hear from them!

I had been told by Patrick Foley, the director/overseer of the Byrd Scholarship in Calif., that they try to get the info out by the second week of May (regarding who the winners are).

My son just received notification of getting the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship (NY) but I have a question for anyone who may know–

Will this money ($1500/per year) cause his college aid (in grants) to be reduced by that amount, or will it be money that we can actually apply to the outstanding tuition balance?

bbsuite85: My daughter also received the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship (NY). Her college applied the $1500 against her expected yearly work study contribution, which did not reduce her overall college aid (grants). I’m not sure if every school sets their own policy, or if they all do the same.

At my daughter’s school we are asked each year we fill out the FA renewal application where we would like to apply the Byrd: 1) summer contribution 2) student’s yearly contribution [which actually seem precisely the same to me] or 3) loans. Her school has no loans for folks in our income bracket, so we always choose number 2. The outside grants do not come out of the university scholarship at her school. Probably, different schools have different policies. So check your school’s FA office, as gibby says above.

Our D got word yesterday (5/5/10) she got the Byrd Scholarship. Our location is Jefferson County (Louisville) Kentucky. A nice surprise, didn’t know about it! :)

Am on the NY scholarship and I think it’s great. You don’t have to worry about maintaining a 4.0 GPA to keep it. All you have to do is make sure you meet your schools minimum GPA which is about 2.0. Anything below that, then they take the money back.

i received notification that i got it yesterday and im also in the NY area. what are the steps after this? do i just wait or should i call the number they gave? it sounded like everything was taken care of, but i have no idea how hesc would know which school im going to

In NY you will receive a paper (don’t remember what it’s called-- something like a registration) and will fill it out with the name of the school on it. It will come in early summer.
