Does any one know if the class of 2009 Byrd scholarships have been (or will be) funded by the DOE?

seriously, this app took like two minutes for me. the school did almost all the work. and i was the only one from my school that was eligible. oh and im in texas.

I applied too, I'm from MA

I applied from Hawaii.

In California, each high school can nominate 2 students. At our school, the val and sal are chosen. The State does the picking--the feds do the paying.

In my state anyone who meets the basic requirements can apply (top 5% of class, over 1150 SAT, etc.) and then I believe it is a random drawing for each country.

I was nominated by my school back in Jan/Feb, and I was the only one. I had to fill out some basic info like rank, GPA, SAT scores, and I had to write an essay about something. Does anyone know if there’s a universal date for the notification of winners? My state’s DOE website is confusing and I couldn’t find it.

No, there is no universal notification date. You can look at last year’s Byrd threads to find out when your state sent them out. Generally, they are sent May - June, with some variation. Texas notifies receipients in early June, and they do not notify those not receiving the scholarship.

For my state, the application is due on the 15th of April… it doesn’t mention a nomination anywhere on the application, so I’m assuming you don’t have to be nominated…? I have a 4.376 GPA and a 32 composite ACT score, and I’m 18 in my 422 class. Should I call a representative of this scholarship to make sure there isn’t some kind of nomination process, or should I just fill this one out?

Procedures and requirements vary by state. In Texas, applications are turned in to the high school. High schools then “nominate” two or three to the state agency which selects award recipients.

Has anyone heard if RCB got funding nationally?

This Dept. of Education budget document, dated 3/12/09 shows that it was funded. See pg. 17 under “Scholarships and Fellowships.”

Quillpen-Thank you I’m sure that was tough to find! I called my state DOE, they said they were told to send in “provisional estimates” or some similar to the US DOE, so that is also encouraging.

I was nominated, and I thought I had a really good chance of getting this.

ACT 35 SAT 2350, Valedictorian and great extracurriculars and references…

But I have heard nothing so far. Have any recipients been notified in Alabama?

Note to those receiving the Byrd Scholarship:
Freshman daughter from Texas attending CU Boulder was awarded the Byrd Scholarship.
In the fall it didn’t pay until October. This Spring, it’s just now being credited to her account.
Expect delays in the money’s actually being credited to your student

I’m in Mississippi and I applied. There was no nomination process; my counselor just gave them out and we sent them ourselves.

Ohio…guidance counselor/principal nominate students

@ JrProv1: They don’t take into account anything other than your RAW GPA and SAT or ACT score

Each state sets its own criteria for how to award the scholarship. While some look strictly at GPA & SAT scores, others take more factors into consideration such as ECs, leadership, community service, recommendations, etc. Alabama, which the poster inquired about, falls into the second category.

JrProv1, the Alabama winners will be notified by May 7th, so there is still time. Evidently only the winners are contacted. This information can be found on page two of the following link:

Good luck to all you applicants!

azn4eyes00:

Alabama’s application includes other items such as extracurriculars, community service, leadership, recommendations, etc. as stated by 2blue.

2blue:

The link you have given is for the 2008 application. There is another link for 2009, and that application coverpage states that the recipients will know by April 3rd.

BUT, there is still a delay in Washington communicating the funding amounts to each state, so it will be later before the recipients will be notified.
