Robertson

so what if my phone number changed?

Does anyone know how we are being notified of whether we're semi-finalists for the Robertson? Are they calling us? If we aren't a semi-finalist, will we find out on Saturday, as well?

whoa they come out saturday??? That's cool

In the past, Robertson semifinalists have been notified at first by email, with a letter sent via FedEx arriving a few days later.

Unfortunately, people who are not selected as semifinalists are not notified at all. I wish they would change this practice, but I do not believe that they have.

They say on the website that if you are not notified at all by March 1, then you are not a semifinalist.

I would think they might call you if they receive no response whatsoever...I think they have your phone number (think that was part of the application) and they have a phone interview at the semifinalist level...

Yeah, it said notification date was Feb 23!! Crossing my fingers...

Received email today.

"Dear [chunlin66]:

Congratulations! I am delighted to inform you that have been chosen as a semi-finalist for the Robertson Scholars Program at Duke University. As the next step in the process, we invite you to participate in a phone conversation on the weekend of March 1-2, 2008. These conversations, in conjunction with candidates' admissions applications, will help us select 100 students to invite to our Finalists' Weekend on March 29 - April 1, 2008."

I'm a semifinalist! But exactly how e=many applicants are semifinalists? It seems like there's a large number of them....

yea i feel like theres probly like 300 semifinalists....what are the phone interviews about anyways

So I guess they emailed a day early? I didn't get it then...

:(

Yeah if they emailed yesterday I didn't get it either :(

I saw this on the website:

(Selection of Semi-finalists) The Robertson Scholars Program faces the very difficult task of selecting only 150 students from Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill's applicant pools of over 38,000 students.

That doesn't really seem like a huge number of semis to me...

I didn't apply for the scholarship; they selected me out of the applicant pool. Do you think that really means anything as far as my chance of actually winning?

Congratulations! It’s a shoo-in for you.

yeah i did not apply for the scholarship either...

does that really mean anything? and i wonder what theyre going to ask for the phone interviews

Congratulations to all semifinalists. Being selected as a semifinalist is, IMO, the single most competitive stage in the selection process and is an immense honor in itself.

Duke clearly believes your application to be truly exceptional and has singled you out as one of only about 75 people (out of ~20,000 who applied) who they want to come to Duke so desperately they are seriously considering paying for your tuition, summer travel, etc. Think about that for a minute and just enjoy it -- it's incredible. (Chapel Hill selects another approx. 75 semifinalists, for a total of around 150.)

Both applicants who proactively submitted supplemental materials and those who were pulled from the regular pool are regularly selected as semifinalists/finalists/scholars, and I have no reason to believe that there is an advantage one way or the other.

yay, i'm a semi

I'm a semi too, but for UNC. Does anyone know if there's any way to switch to Duke?

Hi everyone, I'm also a semifinalist for Robertson, and I didn't apply for it either. I'm SO happy to know that I'm into Duke (especially this early!) but for the actual scholarship I doubt that it's any advantage in the process to not have applied for the scholarship and to have been "picked out" by admissions instead. It's just lucky for our sake that we were singled out, I guess!

there's no advantage to having been taken out of the general pool vs applying.

there's no way to "switch" your finalist status to duke (but don't discount UNC! their scholarship is incredible: full room, board, tuition, laptop, and a large stipend. you're getting paid to go to one of the best schools in the country if you go there)

congrats to all who made it this far, and perhaps i'll see some of you at finalists weekend next month!
