D and I will be traveling to Rochester for Eastman audition. Please recommend reasonably priced, comfortable accommodation. We plan to fly to Rochester. The hotel should be within safe walking distance as piano applicants are asked to be available between 9am and 10pm.

The Eastman webpages have a list with walking times.

Regarding the hotels listed on the Eastman webpage, we did not like the Days Inn on East Ave. D stayed at the Crowne Plaza for her audition, and she thought it was okay. We tried to reserve a room at the Hyatt, but it is more expensive and we found it books quickly on audition weekends.

edad, I did check Eastman page before posting. The problem is that I don't know how safe it is to walk from Eastman to the hotel at 10pm.

rcmama, when did you stay at Days Inn on East Ave? I found out that it is now under different management and has been changed to East Ave. Inn. Do you think it is safe to walk between Eastman and the inn at night?

DD and I stayed at the Clarion Riverside Hotel in October 2005 and it was fine. It's about 3/4 mile from Eastman. I had assumed we would walk, but you may want to consider taking a cab at night. I live in an urban area, but downtown Rochester at 10 pm was deserted except for the occasional guy leaning against a wall with a brown paper bag . . . The area right around the school was fine (lots of people), but I started walking back by myself and it just didn't feel right.

When is your D's audition? We'll be up there 2/2 for violin. This time we're staying at Homewood Suites in Henrietta (I had hotel points!) and I'm renting a car.

The Hyatt is by far the best location for safely walking to and from Eastman. We have been able to get rooms there through Hotwire for $79 and $88 per night on 2 different occasions. Of course, Hotwire's risky because the specific hotel isn't confirmed until you make the purchase, but both times I chose the highest star level available for a downtown Rochester location. Also, it's possible that the rates are much higher even on Hotwire just because it's audition time. Good luck to all!

Make sure to ask for the Eastman rate at the Hyatt. We got a room for under $100 directly from the hotel.

When we were there earlier this year, we stayed at the hotel right at the airport - I think it was a Fairfield Inn or Hampton Inn. It was very nice, very quiet and you could grab a cab right from the aiport. It was about a $20-$25 cab fare to ESM.

pointegirl: We stayed at the "Days Inn" in spring 2005, and it was already the East Ave. Inn. We found it very sketchy and in a borderline area, and did not feel comfortable walking there late at night. We also found downtown Rochester pretty deserted at night, but with more activity around the school, and thought the Hyatt was the best option for staying downtown.

Many a stay for our URochester (not Eastman) student at the Hampton Inn accross from Monroe Comm. College. Clean, safe, with a few restaurants short walk away and an easy drive to Eastman.

Actually the best location for getting to Eastman is the Inn on Broadway (literally RIGHT around the corner)

or the Strathallan
http://www.strathallan.com/htm/welcome.htm.

The Days Inn (or whatever it is now) is probably not good. The neighborhood is fine - it is not sketchy - it's the hotel I'd wonder about... That neighborhood has a lively music/bar scene and frequently has lots of kids around at night (more so on weekends). Our favorite restaurant (Veneto's) is right there.
http://www.venetorestaurant.com/

By the way, anyplace you stay in Rochester will be an easy drive (well, barring a huge snowstorm perhaps). We really have very easy driving.

Both the Hyatt and Crowne Plaza are not far but you're walking down Main St, and not really in the Eastman neighborhood.

GOOD LUCK on the audition!!!!!!!

Thanks, everyone. Maybe it is best that I rent a car. StringMom, yes D is auditioning on 2/2. Good luck to your daughter!

Renting a car would not be a problem. Rochester has lots of less expensive hotels outside the city and it is not that hard to get around (as long as you don't get messed up on the inner loop, but that is another story!) There is a city parking garage right behind the school and street parking is also sometimes available near the student living center.

We stayed at the Hyatt last year, and it was a short walk to Eastman in daytime, but we (D and I) were strongly advised to take a cab at night. That was actually easy, inexpensive, and with free hotel bus service to and from the airport, a better and cheaper option than renting a car. We also arranged for a taxi to give us a tour of the U. of Roch. Good luck with the audition!
