@brucemag I predict the storm causes them to delay final Priority decisions one week. This will relieve the pressure from the amount they seem to have left. Could be wrong and I don’t know how much they are getting, but that’s my prediction. @Leyland thanks for the laugh. Nice to have some humor as we wait. We are also in NY and preparing for the 3rd biggest blizzard in history (as they are telling us it will be).
I wouldn’t worry about the storm. I read they are expected to get 3-5" just as we are here in Pittsburgh. State College is quite used to lots of snow and in my 4 years there, there was ONE 2 day period where they cancelled classes and administrative offices were closed. But that was the blizzard of '93 and I think we had almost 2 feet of snow.
wow guys, you all set a new bar for obsessing
we got about 6" and it’s still coming down. schools are closed but Penn State classes/offices are open, as always. Sometimes things close for ice, or sub-zero temps, but the wheels of admission will continue to spin.
In all seriousness – this is what life at A Big School can be like. Other students will do things your child seems better qualified for but are never offered. Great classes will be unavailable. Career paths may seem murky and tenuous. Services are for those who elbow to the front. parental involvement is not encouraged nor expected unless it’s your endless money. If you cannot stand that particular brand of heat, you may be happiest in another kitchen.
Recently I said that i got deferred from UP and accepted to altoona and would try to get summer session for UP. I just got notified that they dont have space for me at UP summer so I have just altoona.
@dhanvit have you been to Altoona? It’s a really pretty campus and very like UP in its look, although obviously much much smaller. It’s also only 40 minutes from UP and the busses go between Etc. Of all of the branch campuses, I think it is the easiest one from which to still be really involved at UP…football games, thon, etc…
Can anyone tell my daughter and I for sure why her October application will not be decided for 4 to 6 weeks? PSU is a reach for her due to low sat scores and I actually expected her to be denied, but this instead? She has applied to other schools and is only interested in main campus. She seems to be one of a small group pushed this far out from an early October app. What do you all think? Anyone get this and talked to admissions and if yes, what did they say?
@bengalmom1 I am not sure. I would call and ask though. Some have gotten similar messages and when they call they determined that they would still hear by Jan 31st. If you don’t mind, maybe post her stats, as that might help determine what’s happening. Maybe they think they still could have room for her, but are waiting to see if others accept or deny? I’d call for sure though and get answers. Ask to speak to an admission counselor - not just the admission assistant that answers the phone. The counselors usually start taking calls after 1PM.
She has a gpa of 3.5 unweighted and sat scores of 1500 combined, not too competitive with this crew. She has a rigorous course schedule with almost all honors and she’s hispanic. She wrote a great essay but I don’t know if they read them. We always knew it was a long shot but would be over early…I will call one afternoon. She has also been deferred at two other schools instead of denied so it seems to be a theme going on here. The sat scores really hurt her but she doesn’t test well. I think she is being held aside .
What’s the status with you child?
@bengalmom1 My D was accepted yesterday into Summer. She had about a 3.4 GPA and a 28 ACT, which correlates to over a 1900 on the SAT, plus she’s in Penn State’s dual enrollment program so she’s already completed 6 undergraduate credits through PSU. It’s a shame that so much emphasis has to be put on one test for these kids. It’s a lot of pressure. You may have gotten your initial answer, which is basically that you were deferred…but I’d call to make sure. Have you thought about a branch campus for her? Altoona is a beautiful campus and it’s only 40 minutes away and the kids there are really involved at main campus as well. I know most kids have the heart on main campus…I know my D did…but if she wants to be a part of Penn State, a branch can be a great way to go. Over 60% of the students who graduate from Penn State start at a branch. Something to think about anyway if the main campus thing doesn’t work out. I’d definitely call and see what’s going on. I wish you the best of luck!
How wonderful!! Congrats.
I know altoona is nice nut my daughter is not interested. shed rather go elsewhere. I think she has been deferred! Now I know someone else thinks so too and you seem well educated on PSU. It makes sense given the stats of students admitted. I think we will just wait. She has a few acceptances already and will be fine in the long run.
Well I at least think they a
haven’t made a decision but aren’t ready to let her go yet either. So you are waiting to see who sticks and who doesn’t. I think a better idea is to call and ask specific questions about your status. You were promised a decion by January 31st. I’d call for sure and find out what that status is in clear terms.
Perhaps I’ll call. I’ll think on it. I’ll let u know what they say if I reach someone.
Well I talked to Admissions and they said that her on line status was a mistake and that she will hear by end of January. So at least we’ll know and can move on from there. Not expecting admission but its still good to know either way so we can focus on some college visits. Thanks for you help with this.
@jlhpsu Im visiting altoona on friday and I’m pretty excited. I might actually be committing their too!
@bengalmom1 whats the status? today is january 31st
@dhanvit how did you like Altoona?
It was beautiful, I just committed yesterday!
@jlhpsu which campus did your daughter get in to?
@dhanvit She got into Main for summer, but she had Altoona as her alternate campus and would have gone there if she didn’t get into Main. Her boyfriend is at Altoona as are several friends. It’s a very friendly, pretty campus. I think you will like it!
