Whats up with Penn State ?

just wondering, i know penn state is rolling, but i've heard from a lot of people that penn state just rejected the bottom 10% of their applicants and accepted the top 10%-- how is that rolling exactly. i submitted my app in early august and i know i am not at the top of their list (gpa=3.5) but how does their process work exactly?

my twin sister also called bc every year before, they let everyone know november 1st. she reached an admissions counselor who said we wouldnt know until the 15th, then my sister called again then and a different woman said we'd find out in january. does anyone know what's up with this ?

That is a good description of rolling admissions: they go through the applications as they come in, the really great ones are in, the really bad ones are out - likely the top and bottom 10% as you said, and they hang onto the rest to see if and when they will fit in.
Since the recommended filing date is November 30, I do not think they would let everyone know November 1st - actually on the website it says you will hear by Jan 31.

thanks i know, but their system works differently than other school's such as pitt, which i already heard from & was accepted to in early october.

every year before now, penn state has always started informing applicants November 1st, as the admissions counselor told my sister. & i know it says BY january 31st, i just thought this was odd because pitt let me know so early and i have other friends who were rejected, or asked for more info.

I just got accepted yesterday, but I do not think I am in the top 10% of the applicants though. I did get the application in early though (around mid-Oct.)

Plus, they have A LOT of applications to go through.

I am in the top 10% of their applicants and I was accepted yesterday, a little more than two weeks after they received my application in complete. Yet almost all of my friends with less stellar numbers have been waiting more than 2 months for their decisions.

So I guess they accept the good, reject the bad, and hold on to the majority of their applications for some time.

They hold on to the questionable ones to get an idea of the type of applicants they have and base their class from that. I don't know why it's so different this year, though.
