Okay, hypothetically speaking, let's say I didn't get in anywhere on March 10. What are some schools that have late or rolling admissions, yet are relatively strong academically? I've seen some, but what are the most challenging and "best" ones?

i think i’ve heard loomis is rolling???

Peddie has rolling admission. But you won’t get significant FA when you apply rolling.

Many schools. Even many that don’t say they do. Best thing to do is to wait until after March 10, and then go from there.
I think there is a list on SSS maybe after March 10?

well, what grade are you applying for? it all depends.
loomis is taking kids.
kent and westminster are not taking kids for the class of '12 (unless you’re an awesome football player).
choate takes kids, but as juniors, only as recruits.
peddie takes kids. putney takes kids. and, nmh does too.

i would say, if you’re really worried, pick one or two schools and apply now, before march 10th. it’ll bolster your chances at those schools. because right now, they’re still getting a sense of their numbers, and a lot of kids apply late. why? kids figure out they wanna apply… and there’s a good number of kids who get kicked out of boarding school and want to apply to another one.

But wouldn’t that seem like “oh well, i didn’t get in anywhere else so i’ll just go to you as a last resort.” I wouldn’t let that kid in personally.

what does rolling admission mean

rolling admission is when schools can accept people after the deadline because they didn’t fill the classes with enough people.

heres my advice on the rolling- i think they would rather you applied like not now but perhaps in a week or so after the first round is done, because right the admissions office is like in a frenzy and they already have a lot going on trying to come to agreements and stuff like that…btw what are your grades and stats?

Actually rolling admission is a policy not a response to underenrollment. Specifically it’s a policy of reviewing candidates for admission on an ongoing basis rather than in advance of a single application due date. You send in your application and they respond to it. It’s relatively unusual at the top schools.

Sorry I am still slightly confused…so I could send in my application in like April, without taking SSAT’s or interviews and still have a chance…or is it people who already have completed the process, but just wanted to apply later???

Once you have a list of schools which offer rolling admission you can obtain from them the necessary materials and begin preparation for the SSAT. You will have to do everything that an applicant would have to do at a non-rolling admission school, just on a different timeframe. Honestly, I think you’re better off taking your time with the process, visiting a few schools and applying normally for the 2011-2012 school year. You’d be limiting yourself unnecessarily in your range of schools and wouldn’t have really had the time to do your research properly. A BS is your home for a number of years. That’s not something you rush into.

Thank you again for your useful advice!

Loomis most likely will not have rolling admissions since they are trying to cut their student body,

Loomis DEFINITELY has rolling admission.
they told me they’d be looking at my application (they were the first to jump at the opportunity)… and i’m applying as a new junior. SO. anyone who’s applying for the freshmen and sophomore classes, i’m sure it’d be fine… at least they’d give you a chance to apply. getting in as an underclassmen is so much easier. it’s unbelievable.
ALSO.
if you are applying as a freshmen i’d say wait it out. you can apply as a sophomore next year or repeat your freshmen year. as a sophomore, i’d say go for it (why not? it’s not binding) but you can always apply again next year as a junior (not recommended) or repeat your sophomore year. boarding schools over accept every year ON PURPOSE. they know that there are kids who apply and end up not going.
anyhow, i have a feeling that rolling admission’s really for all us kids who get kicked out of boarding school mid-year/after march 10th and have nowhere else to go but back haha

Students apply after March 10th for a number of reasons. My son was waitlisted at the schools where he applied. He was all set to stay at his local day school and try again for the following year. After the disappointment settled, we began talking to him about where he might want to look. We had looked at 11 schools but only applied to 3 (big mistake). Our son kept mentioning 2 schools where he had interviewed but not applied so I got on the phone in the end of April and asked if they were taking late applications. What I found out is there is a 2nd round of admissions that takes place after April. A number of really good schools will consider looking at an application in April/May and even into the summer. With in two weeks, we had 2 acceptance letters in hand. Don’t give up if you find yourself in a waitlist/rejection situation.
