Rolling Admissions / decision timing

Son admitted 10/9. Applied 8/9. First learned by checking application portal. ACT 26, SAT 1280. GPA 3.9 (UW). GPA 5.7/6.5 (W). Rank: Top 4%. 5 AP classes (Stats, Physics 1 and 2, Calc BS, Macroeconomics) plus dual enrollment Sr Yr English. Good luck to all those waiting for decisions!

First timer disaster story… Daughter was independently filling out MSU app on opening day 8/1. Put in rough draft essay as a “place holder” (I know, I know…). She got to the fee section and applied for the fee waiver, and by “applied” I mean hit “submit”(!!!). Impossible to un-submit MSU application, can only upload additional files. She decided essay was good enough with her scores 3.7gpa, 1320 SAT, and extras (NHS board, Varsity Rowing, APs, ECs and 100+ volunteer hours). Did upload new improved senior class schedule. Requested transcript sent back in July (once!). School sent it mid-September and mid-October (why not? haha). I decided to review her app last week and realized there was no award/service/employment/extracurricular section, because she had skipped over that part. (If the section is left blank it doesn’t show up on the final printout.)
Finally stepped in and helped her draft a pdf to upload as an “additional personal statement” with her extras listed. So… still waiting to hear.

That said, she learned from that. Filled out GVSU app and admitted within the week. Working on Honors College app for GVSU. Hoping for MSU. Fingers crossed!

Lyman Briggs is only taking about 500 freshman this year.

Daughter applied 10/20 and received decision 10/29.
Accepted OOS (NJ)
GPA 3.71
ACT 26 Superscore 27
Major - undecided

@DropJaw MSU’s residential colleges (Lyman Briggs, James Madison, and Residential College in the Arts & Humanities) have an allotted number of students that they take every year–Madison is typically ~300, and it sounds like Lyman Briggs is ~500. This doesn’t mean that it’s harder to get into MSU with those majors. MSU doesn’t take major into account in its admission decisions.

However, to be sure to get into 1st choice major or residential college (especially residential colleges), it’s good to get your application in early. My son is a 3rd year in James Madison. When he was applying, we were told that the first ~300 students accepted who chose pre-James Madison as a major are admitted to James Madison College. If some of those students choose not to attend, it opens up slots for others on a JMC waitlist. I think this is similar for all the residential colleges.

As a side note, in JMC, they can’t choose their specific major until 2nd semester freshman year. Everyone gets their choice of major, but they want the students to be exposed to all 4 major topics through their freshman writing and policy classes before declaring a major (there are only 4 to choose from in JMC).

For people got accepted, congratulations!! Did you apply through college application or common app? Just wondering if there is any difference of processing time between two.

Common App here.

Common App

Common Ap

I applied through common app and it took them 10 days to get back to me with a decision. Pretty impressive!

From watching it for many, many years, MSU is notorious for accepting students above a certain GPA and standardized tests pretty quickly. The next rung is OOS with slightly lower scores. In-state with lower scores (3.5 ish) wait the longest. Spots start to open up once UMich sends out their admissions decisions.

Thank everyone who replied as to which application system was used. It seems that most Acceptances were out around Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
