Rommate Change

The waiting is getting unbearable. I wish my roommate didn’t suck so much.

Is there a fee for not staying in the dorm through the second semester?

For Alumni Village and Rogers, there isn’t a fee b/c they’re month to month and you can cancel anytime.
For everything else, undergrad housing, you’re bound by your contract. You can leave but you’ll be charged, unless you have medical or some huge emergency reason for not being able to stay at your dorm for the next term. Don’t hold me to that though. You might want to contact housing.

I feel your pain. I’m in Salley Hall, so I have three suitemates. The one I share a bedroom with isn’t too bad, but the other two are stereotypical fratboys. Not my kind of people. I am looking forward to a change very much.

Ugh frat boys, sorry…that sucks. Did you request any halls or specific ones? I’m surprised you haven’t been moved out yet.
I went to the housing office and asked when I could possibly hear back.
He basically said at any time. It could be tomorrow or next semester. So insane that NO ONE has left either hall I requested. I know I picked the two popular halls, but really? No one? Don’t people decide to leave or cancel their housing throughout the school year?

I selected Broward, Cawthon, and Reynolds, all relatively popular halls. I’d really prefer Reynolds, though. Which ones did you select?

I’m not surprised that I haven’t heard back, but I’m pretty disappointed. My living arrangements are contributing to my ever-growing depression. :/

Ooooh you picked popular dorms as well. I picked Ragans and Traditions, because I need my own room and it’s mostly upperclassmen. It was the only way I survived Summer, helped me close out everyone and focus when I needed to. Also they are much closer to my classes and I don’t get weird vibes.
Currently it’s impossible to focus, because my roommate is so noisy. She constanly talks to herself when she studies, then she whines like a little child to her mom on the phone every night, and her friend lives across from us so they talk ahem I mean yell at each other through the door to communicate. She is messy, and I had to constantly tell her to be clean and clean up. After over a month she finally bought cleaning supplies and only now she understands about sharing chores which I’ve been telling her from the beginning.
This side of campus should just be housing for people who take classes on this side of campus, it’s just too far. I have to take everything with me every morning. I feel like a freshman. I thought you’re supposed to enjoy senior year or at least have your biggest stresser be courses and/or plans after graduation.
The people you live with make a HUGE impact on you and housing just don’t care, I understand there is only so much they can do, but they should have better ways of pairing people in dorms. I don’t think this university makes you fill out interests/hobbies and get a roommate that’s supposed to “work well” with you?
A huge complaint I constantly overhear on campus is how much someone hates/dislikes their roommate. Every bloody day I hear people getting angry or upset about it over the phone or while talking to their friend(s).

I would love my own room, but yeah, sadly, I’m just a lowly freshman. I’ll be a sophomore by credit next semester, but I doubt that really is a factor.

Yeah, the “questionnaire” consisted of a mere two questions:

Do you listen to music while you study? (No)

Are you an early-riser? (Yes)

And what do you know … I got roommates who are the exact opposite. That definitely needs to be improved.

Wait. What? That was your questionnaire! Oh my gosh that is ridiculous. Yeah housing need to sort that out, it would save a lot of issues of kids leaving or having an influx of students wanting to request a roommate change. They can’t change the fact that majority of the dorms on campus are just barely livable, but they can change the process on how they choose/match roommates.

That’s been the questionnaire for matching you up with roommates since I applied for housing for my freshman year.

If they haven’t changed that form in that long (when they’ve changed damn near everything else about housing), apparently they feel like it works. If they were getting a lot of reassignment requests based on those questions, they would likely change it.

Housing assignments require a spot in a dorm you requested to become available before you can move. That requires one of a few things:

 1. Someone never moved in, thus leaving a spot open (and likely, these spots would be filled by anyone living in a temporary spot).
 2. Someone in the building/room style you’re trying to get into wanting out, and wanting to be moved into the building/room style you’re in.
 3. Someone to drop out of the university completely.

papertiger, since you live in Rogers, I think the odds would be better if you started looking at off-campus places that are close to campus, and moving out of Rogers, than getting a reassignment. You might get lucky and have someone move out during the semester, allowing you to move into their spot, but I wouldn’t count on it. I really wouldn’t expect you to get moved into Traditions or Ragans, either, during the semester. When you get assigned to anywhere on campus besides Rogers for Fall/Spring, you sign up for the whole year, and it’s a pain to get out of the contract part-way through. From what you’ve said here though, that would probably be the easiest solution for you to get what you’re looking for in a housing situation.

I’m graduating in the summer so it won’t make sense to move off-campus & pay 900+ for a decent/safe apartment on a short lease. Yes, I already looked into it.
I already got a request in. It’s a long story and it regards my mental health. There are just so many issues on top of issues on top of issues I’m dealing with and living here isn’t helping.

I’ve been offered a single in Reynolds! I have to accept by 5 pm tomorrow (10/16). I will most likely accept, I just wanted to know if I would have to use a communal bathroom or if I share a bathroom with another single room. Thanks! I’m so happy!

You’ll likely share your bathroom with the suite next door, which will be 1-3 people.

Reynolds is a suite-style dorm, so it’s all suite-style rooms. No communal bathrooms.

Alright, thanks. It seems like a pretty good deal, and I’m sure the price bump won’t be unmanageable.

woohoo! Glad you got what you wanted!

If you are moving from a standard room in Salley, to a single in Reynolds, you might want to check this just to make sure:
[Residence Hall Rental Rates / Quicklinks / University Housing / FSU - University Housing](http://housing.fsu.edu/Quicklinks/Residence-Hall-Rental-Rates)

It looks like the jump is $600 a semester.

Fortunately, my finances can handle that. I’ve already paid for housing for this semester, so will I have to pay the $600 deficit for the remainder of this semester, or will the new rental rate take effect next semester? Thanks again.

I believe they will just charge you a proportional amount, not the whole semester.

Like, they’d charge you the difference for the entire month of November and December ($150), and then probably about half for October, depending on when you actually move into the room (so if you don’t move until say, the 20th, then you’ll probably only pay 1/3 of the increase).

Or at least that’s my understanding for how it would happen…

I was wondering, do those with reassignment request get priority over those that are signing new contracts? For example if someone moves out of a Hall i requested and they are sorting out the people who signed new contracts will I get that spot first because I already had a reassignment request or are they going to fill in all the new transfer/incoming kids and I have to basically just give up.

Robbeh, Reynolds requires a meal plan, don’t forget to figure that into your additional costs!
