Rookie -- First time on this site

I'm a Canadian Citizen.

Gender: Male
Race: Asian Indian
Grade: 12

I really dosed off on the whole college prep and meeting the admission criteria thing and now I'm confused and scared on what I can do, and can't do.

GPA: (How do you calculate it) I'll just put averages for my years.

Grade 9: 80%
Grade 10: 80%
Grade 11: 73%
Grade 12: Hopefully atleast high 80's (I'm taking english, calculus, chem, bio all AP)

SAT1: Critical reading: 550
Math: 570
Writing: 530
Essay: 10

Total: 1650

(Note on SATs: I answered almost every single question on the whole test, is that stupid or was I taking a good chance) (Also, I hardly prepared for it)
The next test date is Oct 6, 2007 and I haven't prepped at all. Maybe I can catch 2000 with a few weeks prep? Yes/No?

ACT:

English: 21
Math: 24
Reading: 24
Science: 23

Composite: 23

(I went inside the ACT literally not even knowing the rules or instructions) (I'm rewriting Sep 15, 2007, again with no preperation whatsoever) (But I will prep for the Oct 27 2007 ACT)

In short, I know it was naive to go into standardized tests without preparation, but I really didn't care at the time and was just giving it a shot. Now I want to get into a pre-med program into the US, but I don't know how it will work out. I don't know what scores I need, or what marks (GPA) I need.

I am not into IVY league, but just normal universities like U of Toledo.

I'm open to any comments/advice/information/instructions.

Thanks.

You’re very weak as an int’l applicant. While you’re aiming low as well, you might want to shy away from public schools and look towards LACs/small private universities. For public schools, the pecking order for admissions is In state>out of state>Int’l, so even if the schools you apply to aren’t Ivy caliber, it will make it more difficult. Also, where are your EC’s? I’m told Canadian universities marginalize those, but they might matter a bit more in the states.

If you really want to pursue an education here, I would suggest going to a community college and transferring from there. Doing pre-med at a relatively obscure school, especially given your secondary school record, would probably not be extremely helpful to your prospects for medical school.

I know I’m going to get high 80’s atleast this year in all of the AP classes I’m taking and I have an okay chance at getting a few 4’s or 5’s on the AP exams.

The only problem is, I only have a month to prep for SAT, ACT, and I don’t even know if I should take the SAT2’s.

I’m on the badminton team, cricket team, joined debate club, world affairs club, have around 200 hours of community service, including a few 30 hours inside a clinic. To honestly tell you, I still have to make a list of EC’s. But those are a few.

If not pre-med, I can try going into bioengineering, with biology as a side major? I just want to know what I need to do now to get into a pre-med program in the US.

I am almost desperate and am ready to do quite a bit to get into an atleast average US university.

I know I’m smart enough, but I slacked off a lot and now I don’t have much time.

Bioengineering with biology as a side major? o____O;; I’d suggest researching more about pre-med opportunities before jumping into it. American universities make it no less easy to get into med school than Canadian ones, so if you still have options there, well your application is probably very much tailored to applying to Canadian universities. I understand that the grades you have aren’t necessarily indicative of your intellect, but do know that pre-med is a commitment that doesn’t let you “slack off” at all. You can’t even claim an upward trend.

I feel as though I now suddenly realized what I wanted to do, and I feel like just doing it, and I know I’m capable. I’ve been an AP student since grade 9. Despite not trying in class, I achieved 90’s in maths, sciences and english (up until grade 10), then my mark slipped in math and physics, because you need to do homework.

Three years in a row, I’ve ranked in the top 5% of the participants in various math contests written in our province and few in the country. I wrote the AMC (American mathematics competition) and achieved a 97 by playing around.

I’m not boasting that I’m a natural. Infact, I’m a jackass for not coming to realize the importance of mark in post-secondary education. But I feel as though I’m capable and I’ll do whatever it takes now to achieve what I want.

LoL, those few short paragraphs up there may make a good essay (or part of an essay). Coming to speak of upward trends, when are USA university applications due? Is it logical to take the :

SAT: November 3, 2007
ACT: October 27, 2007

(with around atleast one month preparation?)

(And thank you for all the advice so far!)
