Roomate option issue

Basically, I’m in a group chat with a bunch of girls who will be attending the same college as me next year. Long story short, one of them messaged me with interest in being my roomate. I was really excited, this was my first offer so I had been talking to her about it and was really positive. We established that we liked the same things. She is from my home state, also.

However, yesterday, another girl in the chat also asked me if I would be interested in rooming with her. For some reason, she seems like the better option and I had been wanting to ask her because she seemed really nice and we were very similar as well. She is from a different state

I will think over my decision thoroughly before I make one, but how do I go about telling someone that I want to be someone else’s roomate, especially when she asked me first? I feel bad about it because she is very similar to me but I think that I want to room with the second girl more, since we are a little bit more alike. The first girl did ask me about it again even a few days ago, so I feel bad about having to say that I picked the other one. How should I go about this? Thanks!

This basically happened to me last spring - I had essentially told one girl that I would room with her, but then a better match came along. I just apologized to the first one, and said something along the lines of “I decided to go in a different direction… I hope to see you around campus in the fall!”

Sure, I felt really bad and it was really awkward when I ran into her at orientation, but now I’m kinda friends with her since we have all the same classes and are on the track team together. That being said, I’m so glad that I went with the second roommate. She’s my best friend from my college, and our schedules line up enough without being exactly the same.

Don’t let the fear of awkwardness or hurting her feelings get in the way, you’re deciding who you’re going to live with for almost a year. Go with your gut, and don’t look back
