by the way, I have been a freshman at stanford now for 2 weeks and it is AMAZING! If you had any doubts about applying to stanford, DONT. It's a great school and just think!..you could be in my shoes next year. best of luck!

Hey, hey!!
Whut about the "Tell us what makes Stanford a good place for you" essay? Is there a facebook link for that?

Ok, so apparently this new prompt doesn't require it to be in note/letter format. Does that mean it's a bad thing to write mine that way? I wrote mine to last year's prompt before realize that this years was ever so slightly different.

Hey, for the roommate essay, I was deciding to explain more about me, right? So, I wanted to mention my laptop. Can I mention about " . . . bittorrent and emulators conglomerated in the memory disk" or something?
I mean almost everyone bittorrents right? Is it bad to mention it?

Um, no not everybody bittorrents....bad idea to mention and do :S

lol what is bittorrent, is it a software? i feel really ignorant right about now. lolcats, did you ever retake your SAT's? i remember you from my other thread.

Not yet, going to :)

Anyone have any thought about my previous question? :P

wait a min . . . does anyone here know bittorrent . . . utorrent?? Its like the most popular software out there that can download torrents (basically, its a free way of getting music and games and etc).
Yes, it might be illegal(it probably is, im not sure), but many many people do it.

I wanted to use it while describing my laptop construed somewhere in my room. but i don't know . . . anymore suggestions?

bittorrent is completely illegal....

How does downloading software for free make you seem like a person stanford wants? I'm sure you can still describe your personality without making a direct reference to an "illegal" software.

Lolcats, i'm sure writing it formally/informally would be fine. They're interested in content, creativity, passion, etc. There aren't specific rules to follow. As long as it's not too cooky it's fine.

The use of the Bittorrent client itself is not illegal. The downloading of illegally uploaded copyrighted material is. (It also makes you a selfish loser, but I'll cut the commentary). Torrents can be used for legal things; they just overwhelmingly aren't. Consequently, they have the stigma of illicit use whenever they are mentioned. However, considering, Ashwin is a kid, it is highly unlikely he is using them for anything but stealing content.

So yes, mention you have torrents and emulators (which are either illegal or nebulous in their legitimacy). Please, Stanford needs to know everything about you. It wouldn't be fair to them that you withheld such an important character trait.

Edit: Getting should probably be replaced with something like "stealing" or "ripping off the hard work of others". Just something more accurate than what you said. The fact that everyone does it doesn't mean its right.

/commentary

hey, i don't really use it often.
i only copied one game that barely works. The point wasn't to go really in depth about it. When i wanted to describe my win2000 computer (its friggin 2000, almost nothing works here), i just wanted to point it out . . . sorry if i offended you guys or something . . . I mean my uncle works at Nintendo, and I want his company to do well. I don't want to hurt the company by emulating expensive games (I doubt my laptop would even run it).
@ amciw
Please, don't make rash judgments about people you don't know. I am not a kid or a loser, nor am I a big stealer (as I mentioned above, I only got one game on, and its barely working. For purposes, I just wanted to mention the bittorrent in the essay, but really, its not important . . . not after hearing you guys.)
I just want to make it clear that I am not here to start a pointless fight. The purpose of the question was to see what you guys would think about including this in a description of my computer. I'm glad I asked because I don't want this kind of controversy happening with the adcoms.

You are a kid by definition of your age and educational status, not maturity or mental capacity. You are a loser only because you torrented a game. That wasn't an assumption, and neither were mine about the first issue. And so you know, the fact the game works poorly does not make it more right.

That being said, you are obviously perceptive enough to realize that mentioning Bittorrent would be an exceptionally bad idea. You could sub in something with a aura of legitimacy and communicate the same thing to the adcoms. Since you are not in my graduating class, I don't worry about your competition.

"Since you are not in my graduating class, I don't worry about your competition."

Sorry, I didn't understand this. Can you be a bit more clear please?

I initially said tell them about it because, jokingly, I wanted to reduce my competition. Since you are a junior, it doesn't matter.

Haha, amciw, I was thinking the exact same thing. I hope everyone but me mentions bitorrent, it would make getting in a helluva lot easier.

evilness.... (10char)

Back on topic, is it a better idea to write all about yourself, or about one thing, more in depth.

At all three seminars I've heard on this essay topic, each of the two admission officers (one repeat), said repeatedly that this essay prompt was specifically designed to let you speak a little more informally, so they could get a better sense of the kid-to-kid part of your personality.
