Roommate Request

My daughter has all along been planning to go with a potluck roommate assignment. So of course, last night she finds out that a friend who was deferred got in and is attending UNC after all and they want to room together. The day the dorm and roommate assignments come out.

My question is does anyone know if it's still possible for them to be placed together? This other girl does not yet have a dorm assignment. Any suggestions for how to proceed today in requesting that they be assigned together? Not sure if they change roommate assignments at this point.

One of my friends is going through a similar situation. She inquired about her rooming situation and they told her requests would not be considered until two weeks after school starts!

Problem here is that the girl who just got admitted did not (b/c she could not!) submit her housing application by the first deadline and so will likely now be placed (eventually) where there is room. Not realistic to think that UNC would move your daughter’s roommate elsewhere to accommodate your daughter’s wishes, so your daughter would have to give up her assignment (if she even could at this point) and take a big chance that they would end up together (and if so who knows where). This is largely speculation so call housing to get your questions answered. Maybe best bet is for friend to list as her first choice the dorm where your daughter’s been assigned and if it’s HJ or Craig (biggest freshmen dorms) maybe there’s a good chance that the friend will end up there, too. Good luck.

My son just learned he is in HoJo. I’m not happy since this was not on list at all. Looks pretty old & run down. Someone please tell me it’s not that bad! He is pretty studious & doesn’t party. Plus it’s really far from his classes. Is there a shuttle or bus or does everyone bike?

I think most freshmen end up with a dorm that’s not on their list. HoJo is basically a dump (I lived there freshman year), but at least all the floors have A/C now! The distance from North Campus was my biggest issue. I just walked to class most of the time, but the bus system can really save you if it’s super hot/freezing/raining. There is a bus stop right behind HoJo or he can cross one street and wait at the stop in front of Ehringhaus. The bus system can be a bit daunting at first but once you figure it out it is really simple.

Thanks jambaby. How far is the walk in terms of time & distance to mid & north campus? Are mopeds allowed or deemed “dorky?” Bikes? I take it that it’s an uphill hike from Hojo to get anywhere?

My daughter also did not put HoJo on her list of choices and that’s where she was placed. On a positive note, they did change her room this morning so that they are together. I think it was made easier since the other girl did not yet have a room assignment so they gave her one and stuck my daughter in with her. Still in HoJo.

3girlsmom–As a mom, I’m so glad it worked out! I guess our kids will get the “Carolina Experience” living in Hojo. My son will be on the 2nd floor. He knows his roomier but have no idea about suite mates. I hope there will be somewhere conducive to a study environment!

I would say the walk to North Campus/classes can range from 15-25 minutes depending on how fast you walk. My roommate had to get to a building on Franklin St. at 8AM freshman year and she always walked, so it’s definitely doable. All the exercise certainly keeps the Freshman 15 at bay! LOL. The walk is almost entirely uphill (not super steep though). I always liked the walk because there was so much to look at, but when the weather is gross it can be a pain. A bike would definitely help, but some people don’t like dealing with the lock commotion, etc. I don’t think mopeds are technically allowed on the sidewalks, but you do see a few around.

Living in HoJo is the epitome of the Freshman Experience, so on the social front it is a great dorm. I met so many people just by riding the elevator, etc. And after living in those conditions (ha) you can fully appreciate the Middle/North Campus dorms when you “move up in the world” sophomore year! ; -)

Also, on the studious front - another hard thing about living in HoJo for me was that it was basically impossible to do homework/study in the room. The rooms are really small and then with suite noise, the bathroom, etc, it just stressed me out too much to try and study in the room. The annoying thing about that was that on the weekends I would basically have to pack my backpack like I was going on a trip (snacks, water, outerwear, whatever) and hike to North Campus to camp out in one of the libraries (the UL or Davis) or the Student Union for the day. You also sort of have to do this for classes because the dorm is too faraway to make multiple trips during the day. Having to be constantly prepared, so to speak, was a big adjustment, but I think if I had been mentally prepared (ha) it wouldn’t have been such a shocker. I got so tired of lugging so much stuff around though!

Thanks again, jambaby! Yeah, that’s exactly what we wanted to avoid…packing for the day…seems to negate the purpose of being on campus. He & his roommate are both sort of mature, not really interested in the party scene. Not saying they wouldn’t … but…they both have expectations that classes will be harder. My son plays classical music while studies to reduce the stress…he likes it quiet. I hope he makes it through the first year!

There are a couple of places on Facebook for Hinton James.

If you go here [Welcome to Facebook - Log In, Sign Up or Learn More](<a href=“Facebook - log in or sign up”>Facebook - log in or sign up) and go to Discussions, there is one for Hinton James.

Also, this is a Facebook Group for Hinton James 2011-2012. Might be able to get in touch with suitemates through this link. [Log In | Facebook](<a href=“UNC Hinton James 2011-2012 Public Group | Facebook”>UNC Hinton James 2011-2012 Public Group | Facebook)

Hmm. For whatever reason, it appears that second link doesn’t want to take you to that group.

Once in Facebook, search for UNC Hinton James 2011-2012 and you’ll find the group and can ask to join.

Yes, they will definitely get the full freshman experience living in this dorm!

Mine chose UNC at the 11th hour so we didn’t have much time to research dorms before the 5/15 deadline. I now see, after searching, that 2 dorms are substance free & advocate a healthy lifestyle which sounds like a great match for my son. I wonder if anyone who might be reading this thread can offer anymore insight into these & how likely it would be to get the assignment changed. After reading many comments on FB last night, I gather that a handful of incoming Freshman were able to change assignments yesterday. Any thoughts out there?

mommydeerest, I would give housing a call and see what they say about changing the assignment to the substance-free dorm… Couldn’t hurt! The substance-free dorm is in a great location. As much as “packing for the day” sucked when I lived in Hinton James, it at least taught me how to be prepared for anything and everything, lol. I think if I had known going into college that I would have to do that it would have been better (attitude is everything!), but I was kind of clueless. I was also able to track down suitemates via Facebook back in the day.

My roommate and I were never into partying, but for those first few weeks you will definitely meet people who are obsessed with going to Frat Court, etc. Just stick to your guns and all that mess dies down after a few weeks.

D was in HoJo last year and as typical, she didn’t request it. She ended up loving it so rest easy. The walk is a pain but it’s a good place to be for freshmen. She was on crutches twice during the year and simply took the bus. The dorm rooms are cruddy…however, she’s staying in the Everett dorm on North Campus for the summer…and her dorm room is still cruddy. The HoJo room actually seems much roomier because it has built in furniture. It also has large overhead cubbies for storage. Comparing the HoJo suite style to the Everett hallway style, she also likes the suite style better as well as the balconies.

Jambaby— thanks again for your insight…can’t say enough how valuable your perspective is. As for packing up & being prepared, my kid knows all about that. Big HS campus & his locker nowhere near where he needed it. Plus he’s one of the few who doesn’t drive so he couldn’t stow things in his car…forcing the poor kid to backpack a 30 lb bookbag all day. He loves to walk so that part won’t be terrible. He is very health conscious …doesn’t drink or do drugs…also very environmentally concerned. He’s an old soul…an old granola hippie without the drugs. This plus I know that he won’t survive without some quiet time to meditate, makes me think the substance free environment will suit him & Heisman a good leader who could uphold & advocate those values.

Ha…my phone loves to auto correct/complete…idle where “Heisman” came from. Meant it to read, “he is a good leader.”

No problem! It seems like just yesterday I was moving a mountain of stuff into HoJo… : -)
