Roommates

How are roommates assigned? Do we get to be like "oh I want to dorm with this type of person, not that type of person," or do they just toss us in a blender? Also, how do you choose which dorm house you want to stay in? I heard Potomac is really nice. Can someone explain the whole process to me? And argh. Still waiting for my ed2 results.

Thanks.

I’d like to know too! Can anyone answer this?

You fill out a kind of questionnaire that asks you about your living/social habits and it matches you based on that. However, you can choose someone to live with and add each other on the housing form (I would advise against this for freshman year). Be completely honest on the housing form and you should be fine. My freshman year roommate and I became really good friends.

Potomac is nice, depends on what you’re looking for in a dorm. Thurston and Potomac have reputations of being party dorms, but that’s the ultimate freshman year experience. Madison and Crawford are also nice options, much smaller buildings and quieter.

Just to elaborate a little bit more, you basically get to rank your preferences of which residence hall you would like to live in. I’m currently a freshman living in Somers Hall (on the Mount Vernon Campus). On my housing application I thought you had to put a residence hall in each slot, so I listed a few that were on the Mount Vernon Campus. (NOTE: If you list a Mount Vernon Campus residence hall anywhere on your preferences chances are that’s where you will be living). I was so upset when I found out I was put here but it was honestly one of the best mistakes I ever made.

The Mount Vernon campus is about 10 minutes bus ride away (the buses run 24 hours) and its much more of a traditional campus. It also has a little bit more of community feel than then Foggy does. Also the Politics and Values and Women Leadership Programs are housed here (look into those if you haven’t already).

But if you’re ED the nice thing for you guys is that you get a pretty good pick of any of the residence halls! Madison and Potomac are pretty much filled up by the time RD gets to rank housing so that is definitely to your advantage.

Also for roommates you fill out a short survey, or you can request to live with someone you already know. I would say the majority of people do random roommate assignments (that’s what I did!) and it works out find. There’s a system called room swap that opens a few weeks after the beginning of school where you can always switch into a different room if your roommate situation doesn’t work out (or your residence hall!) so don’t be too worried about being stuck!

I am trying to get into Thurston in a double. I am a partier, I will put Potomac as my second choice and Madison and Lafayette as my 3rd and 4th. I got in EDII, any suggestions?
