When applying for housing I saw that it is not guaranteed I will get a double without a mutual roommate agreement. I’m attending from OOS and don’t know anyone else going to UMN Twin Cities, but I cannot afford being assigned a single. So, what’s the likelihood I’ll be assigned to a single without the mutual roommate agreement? How do I find a roommate so I can avoid the risk? Any information would be helpful
My son went through this all last year. He is also OOS. I assume you paid your deposit and are in the queue for housing? If not, you should get on that because you might end up on the St. Paul campus for dorm assignment. There is a roommate survey that you will fill out and a website that you can review matches, contact them and start a dialog. There are a LOT of people out there in the same boat as you. My son found a lot of matches and sent emails to all of them. Some had already found roommates but some did not. He found someone that he had a lot in common with and they have lived together for the past year.
Based on what my daughter did, here is my advice. Join the class of 2022 group on Facebook and Instagram and post your information and interests, like the others have done, and that you are looking for a roommate. Once you connect with someone, you then go into the housing request form and update it with the roommate request. I think the deadline to complete this is 5/1. The room assignment should be based on the earliest deposit of the two potential roommates. Good luck!
My daughter also found someone on the facebook group. They met up in person recently and I believe they decided to make the roommate request on the form as well. If Minnesota is like other universities, there usually aren’t enough singles to meet demand, so those often go to students with highest priority, mostly juniors/seniors unless there is a special need request. But maybe some are available to freshman in less popular dorms?
