I was just wondering how the rooming assignments are to be made, in terms of how they pair people and whether the dorms are picked through a lotto system. Also, when do we find out who our roommates are?

You’ll be given the class roster in August with your roommate/ suitemate assignments. The assignments are mostly based on religious needs and more mundanely on bathroom preferences.

in what way do u mean religious needs alum?

Dietary restrictions may make eating at the DC difficult so some 1st year students may request HCA and be off the meal plan entirely.

Also, single sex bathroom assignments may be more than a "preference" if you follow some religious tradtions.

did you find a 4th course yet? :)

no, have not found it yet...figure i'll have lot of time during preseason to look it up.

The most important factor in deciding housing is probably bathroom preference, so the housing office will place you into either HCA (single sex) or scatter you into Barclay or Gummere (co-ed). Barclay vs. Gummere is usually decided by your preference for a single or double. The system isn't perfect because every year there's too many people who desire housing in one area (a single, a double, an apartment, etc.). But they try their best to place you where you want.

After that, assignments for individual halls and roommates are usually made by a student responsible for freshman housing/customs group. Oftentimes these are Customs Heads, the people responsible for organizing orientation and the customs program. They try and mold diverse customs groups and after they are finalized, make roommate or suitemates matches based off of your housing survey plus any other information admissions sends over.
