I am OOS from Illinois.
Here are my Stats:
GPA UW: 3.87 (most rigorous classes)
ACT: 33

ECs...DECA
Entrepreneurship Franchising - 1st place in state, qualified for internationals (2012)
Retail Merchandising - 2nd place in Regionals (2013), Top 10 in State (2012, 2013)
Entrepreneurship Franchising - 4th place in state, qualified for internationals (2013)
Entrepreneurship Franchising - Finalist, Top 10 in International competition
I was the President of my school DECA club this year (2012-2013 school year)

I was also involved in M3..which is a freshman mentor program in my school. Next year I will mentor a group of economically disadvantaged kids.

National Honors Society (looking for leadership position for next year)

Volunteering at Hospital (50 hours)
I play the Tabla (Indian percussion instrument...idk, adds diversity?)

Assume solid essays and recommendations (at least on par with other Ross hopefuls).

SO....how would you say my chances look? Also, how are my chances for Michigan LSA in general? (and honors program)
Thank you!

For Ross Preferred, your GPA is below accepted average (3.91). You got great awards but really nothing business related extracurricular. Awards and activity involvement are different. Perhaps a few internships here and there could have been nicer. So I would say reach for Ross.

There is no such thing as “great shot” unless you are a URM from Michigan and have perfect stats. OOS students will be looking at a 20% admit rate next year. I would say match, and only if he applies EA.

Thanks to you both for replying.
I’ve heard from many, including a Michigan college rep who came to my school, that Michigan has no preference between OOS and in state kids, and in fact in state kids actually complain about this. So do you have statistics to back your 20% claim up? Because that’s not what I’ve been hearing.

Each year, roughly 15,000 Michigan residents apply to Michigan (so the number of OOS applicants is equal to the total number of applicants minus 15,000)

Michigan looks to enroll 6,000 freshmen in the fall

Michigan likes a 60/40 in-state/OOS ratio, which means Michigan likes to enroll 2,400 OOS students in its freshman class

The yield rate for OOS students is 25%, so Michigan will admit roughly 10,000 OOS applicants to enroll the right number of OOS students

If the last three years are any indication, you can anticipate between 50,000 and 54,000 applicants in total next year. I personally expect 52,000 applicants. So according to the math, I would estimate approximately 37,000 OOS applicants for 10,000 acceptances. Ok, so 20% was a little low. It is more like 27%. Still, I would not count an an acceptance with those odds.

Apply EA at all cost. Chances for Honors and Ross are not good, but you lose nothing by trying.

Foreveralone, how is 27% exaggerated? Did you even read my post. For one, I was referring to 2014, as that is the year that is relevant to the OP. You said yourself that next year’s acceptance rate will likely be in the 29%-31% range. How is 27% an exaggeration? Is 27% really much lower than 30%? Further, I was clearly referring to the OOS acceptance rate, not to the overall acceptance rate, because that’s what the OP was asking about since he is also OOS. I think it is fair to say that the acceptance rate for OOS applicants is lower than the acceptance rate for Michigan residents. If that is the case, and the overall acceptance rate next year will likely be around 30% (assuming the trend of the last three years continues), then I think a 27% acceptance rate for OOS students is actually pretty accurate.

I think Alexandre is coming off a bit strong… 3.87 w/ difficult coursework (I’m assuming at least 6-7 APs by graduation), 33 ACT, clear activity involvement and success… I think you can easily call UM at match. It’s no safety, but I’d be a tad surprised if you weren’t accepted. Write solid essays and apply EA.

Ross is a reach. You never know though… I got Ross with similar stats.
