Hey guys!
So during my freshman year, I had an incredibly rough start. My GPA was generally below a 3.0 for each semester and I accumulated a total of approximately 30 units my entire freshman year–one F and C (these two grades were earned in required major classes) and the majority were Bs. My academic downfall was mainly due to personal reasons. I wanted to change and rekindle my motivation. So, the summer going into sophomore year, I took a total of 16 units–Math, Gen Chem II, and two GEs–and managed to earn two Bs and two As (one class was retaken to replace the F I earned in freshman year). My cumulative GPA was now increasing steadily to a 3.18. I really wanted to do even better, so I did something insane, taking 29 units in a single fall semester I kid you not. This was my fall schedule (from two different community colleges that includes online classes)
- Organic Chemistry (5)
- Biology II (4)
- Calculus 1 (5)
- English (3)
- Sociology (3)
- Anthropology (3)
- Communication (3)
- Human Sexuality (3)
I earned all As and my GPA rose to 3.54 working exceptionally hard. It was by far the toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life. And then subsequent to that semester (winter intersession) I took Physics, Calculus 2, and Econ 2 (13 units) and then finishing it off with Organic Chemistry II with Lab, Physics II, and Biology III (16 units). I earned all As, ultimately leading me to the 3.6-3.7 range (I forgot the exact value). Extreme hard work really pays off. Despite my GPA being in the competitive range, I am still worried at how my freshman year academics will impact my chances of admission.
If any of you guys wanted to know, these are my extracurriculars:
- Pre-med Club
- A lead volunteer for 4 years at a non-profit organization that conducts medical missions over the summer in third world countries
- Active volunteer in the ER unit of two hospitals (~150 hours in total so far, 3-4 hours a week for each hospital)
- Math tutor for 8 hours a week
Do I still have a shot at UCLA?
