I'm asking because I got a dismal 2.8 my first semester at MCC, had a 2.63 halfway through the spring semester but decided I wanted to go to UCLA/UCB, turned it around and now have a 3.45. I'm in TAP, tutor math at the college, and am taking a maximum 18 units this fall, where straight A's would leave me at a 3.74. I'm on track to complete TAG requirements and really wouldn't mind going to UCSD or UCD, but I'm just curious if UCLA and UCB would give me preference for turning my grades around.

Depends on your major, and usually for UCLA and Cal, 3.5+ cumulative UC transferable is the magic #. ALso, the personal statement impacts it a lot too.

Huh? I was asking if a grade progression like:

Fall 2007: 2.8
Spring 2008: 4.0
Fall 2008: 4.0

would be preferred to something like:

Fall 2007: 3.7
Spring 2008: 3.6
Fall 2008: 3.7

if the overall GPA was the same.

an Upward trend definitely will help but it may/may not be enough for you to transfer to UCLA/UCB what major are you?

You should explain the one bad semester in your personal statement.

I've been back and forth between Math and Econ and intend to double major.

Well, they do like to see upward trends as opposed to downward trends! I think this might actually be quite common (an upward trend) and if you can explain it well I think it could very well work in your favor. I don't know your story, but I bet you probably had to make some hard choices to turn your GPA around like that: I'm sure they'd like to hear about that, if you think it it compelling enough to be part of the personal statement.

it helps. if u get to explain why u didn't do so well before thats even better.
hope ur grades for ur major pre reqs are good cuz those matter regardless of ur grade trend.

I would highly suggest going as a math major and not as a econ if you want to get into UCLA or UCB.

i know UCB u don't have a back up major
is that true for UCLA as well?

no@Guardiangel

Fall 2007: 2.8
Spring 2008: 4.0
Fall 2008: 4.0

is marginally better than

Fall 2007: 3.7
Spring 2008: 3.6
Fall 2008: 3.7

Getting 4.0 in a semester (assuming full time student status) is not easy at all and even 3.5+ students never get it once.

I had 4.0 last semester with the minimum 12 units, the trick is getting it again with the maximum 18 units.

The only way you can have a back up major for UCLA is if you are in the TAP program.

Logic, that is good to hear! Keep up your good progress! Also, be aware that the more units you take, the harder it is to get 4.0 GPA.

Ironically, the only semester that I got a 4.0 GPA was the time I took 5 courses (biology, music, speech, philosophy and differential equation) with a total of 18 units and all of them are from 5 different areas as you can see. That is my best semester in my college career and I have won numerous scholarships in that semester as well.
