I would like to get my son a laptop for the fall for Engineering at Rowan, any suggestions for what laptop to buy him?
Thanks

Not as crucial as you might think. Lots of computers in the engineering lab, the library, and Mimosa’s lab is open 24/7.

Best thing I did was not rush to buy my son a Windows Vista when he entered Rowan in 2009. Held off until Windows 7 came out; far better OS. From what I’ve heard and read, I would hold off on a Windows 8 for now.

Be sure to get a 64-bit OS chocked full of memory. Take advantage of any Office Home & Student discounts. It’s best that he buys it under his name and uses his student ID.

Asked my son the same (just graduated with a CEE; got a job!). Same answer. Most use the laptop for personal use (in parentspeak: “nonsense”) especially freshman year. The lab computers will be used far more because of the complexity of engineering software.

What he’ll need more immediately is a 2-way variable speed window fan, and an additional tabletop oscillating fan.

Rowan Blvd (“RoBo”) parking garage and Marriott Courtyard hotel are almost done. More retailers have moved in. Big projects, including a 2nd engineering building and a business admin bldg are coming soon. Good luck! Get involved.

I wouldn’t worry about anything too fancy. From my observations, it is me and my fellow computer engineers that use laptops everyday in school and carry them around. A standard laptop should be fine, I see most of the other engineering majors just using the computer lab computers that already have the programs you’ll use such as Solidworks.
