RPI or Syracuse?!

for Communication?
RPI: $26,000/yr scholarship; 4 yrs
Syracuse: $31,000 first year; 3.0 GPA to maintain the scholarship

are these awards merit or FA? Because SU merit awards are for 4 years…and I am assuming Newhouse?

it’s part of the financial aid package but those are scholarship $
and yes. Newhouse.

I believe that RPI requires you to maintain a minimum GPA as well.

Newhouse or RPI for Communications…and Syracuse will give you more money? And RPI has a higher COA. I think this is a no-brainer, unless you have an unquenchable appetite for all things Troy.

RPI has a communications school? didn’t know that…ok, anyway, Newhouse top ranked for internships and emplyment with USC-Annenberg, Northwestern, UNC, ETC…if $$ is similar, go with Newhouse…

Syracuse’s $ is only for freshman yr but RPI says it’s “$104,000 over the next four yrs”
If I can’t get money at Syracuse after the first year, I’m def. screwed
and it’s Newhouse vs. EMAC (Electronic Media, Arts, & Communication)

I would have a conversation with the Financial Aid office at SU. Are you sure the $31,000 is for one year ONLY, or will it be renewed on an annual basis as long as you maintain a “B” average? If you have any concerns about being able to keep your GPA up I would also seek clarification from RPI as to whether or not you need to maintain a minimum GPA. I’m pretty certain you do and have heard stories of kids who lost their scholarships at RPI due to overindulgence in the fraternity scene (btw, this is obviously not a scenario that is isolated to RPI).

Merit aid will be renewed automatically as long as you don’t drop below a certain GPA. (Very manageable to keep your scholarship. If you did well in high school, this should not be a major concern). If you’re worried, check the financial aid website for SU for the specific GPA requirement. As for need aid, it will be re-evaluated each year.

still confused about the $$ thing…$31,000 is a strange amount for a merit scholarship at SU; me thinkin’ it’s a combo of FA and merit

No idea about the RPI $$ but that too looks like a combo of merit and FA

Maybe OP can clarify so we can judge packages: FA is NEVER guaranteed anywhere for 4 years, while merit is often guaranteed if, as Illusu says, you don’t drop below a certain GPA…and yes, if you received the merit in the first place at SU, chances are you will not drop below the threshold…

Go to Syracuse! 28% female, 72% male over at RPI…That’s just not right. Anyway, for communications, Newhouse hands down.
