Hey i'm thinking about attending RPI, but im not so sure i like the ap/transfer credit policies they have there. I heard everybody takes a bio course as a freshman? If i have 8 credits for a bio course i took concurrently with my high school and the local college. I got a 5 on the AP Chem exam and a 5 on the AP physics exam, a 5 on the AP Calc, 4 on AP english, and have 6 credits for a Western Civilization class. What would they do with all this credit. An attending student has advised me that they will only accept 8 credits. Is this true???

No, that is not true, but there are limits on transfer credits applied to core curriculum requirements (no more than 8 credit hours for the sciences and 8 for H&SS). Transferred credits beyond those used for the core can be applied as electives. See the link below for guidance on transfer and AP credit:

I don’t think ap bio credit counts towards cell bio if that’s what you’re talking about

AP Bio counts as Intro to Bio, which pretty much every major needs. I’m not sure about other types of transfer credits, but for AP I had 24 credits that transfered in without a problem.

Don’t let anyone try to convince you to take those intro courses anyway (chem I or intro to bio). If you have the credit, use it.

unless you have decided to follow the pre med curriculum ^

Thanks! I know im supposed to have about 32 credits going in. I’m probably going to do chemE with a double major in Chemistry. So if i’m a science major, all my science credits will transfer in no problem, correct? Im only expecting my history credit to go towards the H&SS core.

Hey, may i ask which major you are and what credits you transferred in? Thanks

In a rush, so a pretty crappy response coming up:

Credits will be transferred in regardless of your major.

Assuming your scores on the AP exams were 4 or higher, you should be getting credit for them (see www.rpi.edu/dept/admissions/resources/APSheet.pdf ), implying that you should get English counted towards your H&SS core as well.

The one somewhat surprising thing I know of from science-based APs is that stats becomes econ credit.

You can probably see your transfered credits on SIS by now ( [Rensselaer’s Student Information System](http://sis.rpi.edu) ), assuming you got your account details.
