I'm from NJ and Ive been accepted to both RPI and University of Pittsburgh and would have to pay around the same for each school with financial aid. I'm planning on majoring in applied mathematics and probably economics but am having trouble choosing a school so I'd just like to hear your opinions. What school do you think would prepare you for a career better? Where do you think you would get a better education and better internships/coops? Would it be better to attend one school if you want to go to a top ranked grad school? Thank you for your help!

Hello. I graduated from RPI, now live in Pittsburgh, have taken some courses at Pitt, and know several current undergrads now at Pitt. Given the same costs, my choice for engineering would be RPI. But in your case, maybe not.

1 - Pitt has more choices, and is stronger in more areas. RPI does have engineering, management, and economics majors. But if you got interested in political science, for example, Pitt could offer more.

2 - RPI is smaller and located in a smaller city. Beyond that, RPI is physically and socially set apart from Troy. You will learn to love and possibly play ice hockey if you go there. Pitt is located in a medium-sized city, with ready access to more cultural facilities, more big-time college sports, and is integrated right into the city. For example, all Pitt students get a county bus pass and can go pretty much anywhere at will. CMU is adjacent to Pitt.

3 - Both schools have co-ops, internships, and other research opportunities. Both are well-regarded for graduate school admissions. The main factors in graduate school admission will be your undergraduate record and possibly GRE test score.

Good luck.
