RSI 2017

Is it terrible if my transcripts are sent a bit late? Will the deadlines be moved this year maybe due to weather issues?

@yasdfjc the transcripts are sent online by your counselor

@isFress Awww it does? :frowning: that sucks, cause I live in Cali, probably one of, if not the most, competitive state.

And again, should I talk about FBLA? Cause it’s not STEM related, but it’s one of my louder achievements

@avi1234 I’d mention it. There’s a section under Applicant Awards and Accomplishments for non-STEM things, so you could put it there. I mentioned being a few non-STEM achievements in mine too, such as NHS and my school’s literary journal.

Hello, I am a current junior and I think I’m done with RSI application but I just want to know how my app. looks.

Some numbers to start:
36 ACT (36 Math, 36 English, 36 Reading, 35 Science), 1510 PSAT (227/228) (760 Reading, 750 Math), 800 SAT Chem, 800 Math II, 790 Bio-M, 760 World H., 4 AP Bio, 4 AP Chem, 5 AP Calc AB, 5 AP World H. Current classes: Multivariable Calc. (will take AP Calc BC exam), AP Physics I, APUSH, AP Macroecon, AP Microecon, AP Spanish, Accel. English III. 4.50 weighted GPA b/w freshman and sophomore year, 4.0 unweighted GPA (our school only let us take one weighted course in math our freshman year). Expecting 4.61 weighted GPA after first semester transcripts come out.

Scientific Stuff:
I took part in the “Genes, Genomes, and Biocontrol” cluster in the COSMOS Math and Science Program at UC Irvine in the summer of 2016. The research poster project I developed during COSMOS will be submitted to the SIEMENS competition. I am currently in training to become a Teaching Assistant for future COSMOS programs. I also was accepted into and participated in a biomedical engineering internship at Edwards Lifesciences in Irvine (designs and manufactures tissue heart valves for use in surgery) in summer of 2015. I interned with an optometrist in Karachi, Pakistan during the summer of 2015; I interacted with patients and went inside operating rooms to watch live surgeries. I am conducting volunteer biological research as a “Visting Scientist” at the Mortazavi Lab of Developmental and Cell Biology at UCI along with a PhD student; my research project will be published in a scientific journal upon its completion in a couple months. I won two honorable mention awards at the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair. I took Marine Biology and Chemistry classes at UCI as a part of their Gifted Students Academy program in 2015. I know coding in R/RStudio, Javascript, and C/C++, as they are the basis of my current research project as well as my project as a part of COSMOS (especially R).

You are definitely a contender for RSI but I read somewhere they mostly decide based on the essays and letter of recs.

Hey everyone! I wish you all good luck on your apps (I will also be applying :P)! I was just wondering what they mean by “official score reports”. Can I just go to AP Central or PSAT Central and click “download score report”? Will that suffice? thanks!

@anonymous0320 Yes

Does anyone know if you get notified if the letter of recs have been put in? I’m deciding on whether I should talk to my teachers tomorrow to remind them.

My teacher told me the deadline for the recommendations is the 17th-- that is what they see on their portal page. Same with transcripts. Can anyone confirm?

@rohash00 Yup! I just talked to my counselor about the transcript upload and I saw on his computer that the deadline is the 17th.

Does anyone know what the average length of the personal statements should be? Some questions I can fill up a whole page but others I just don’t have that much to write… What do you think would be a good length?

Why is the discussion for RSI so small this year? In previous years there are like 40 pages worth of forum

Can the teachers submit references after I submit the application?

Let’s hope the size of this thread reflects the size of the applicant pool for this year’s RSI :stuck_out_tongue:

@anonymous0320 Yes, teachers can submit references after the student submits the application. That’s what I did.

@Pulsatix Haha right? I really hope so.

@yuiichiiros - how late can teachers submit recommendations? Do you know?

I have the same question–stressing out a little bit

@goodboi1 and @nickb2413 Don’t worry, the teachers have until the 17th to submit their letters

So, a couple of weeks ago, I signed up for a Slideroom account (my intention was to later delete it or never use it again, but I can’t figure out how to delete it, does anyone know?), simply because I wanted to see what the new application looked like. I haven’t actually put any information in (or tried to submit anything). I’m a sophomore, so they won’t see any of my information, will they? Also, do you think if I applied to RSI next year, and my name was associated with a previous account, that my application would be disregarded?!
