RSI 2017

Does anyone here know if they will accept late applications? I messed up the EST time since I’m on the West Coast.

Students who are applying to RSI might also be interested in this new summer program at Yale, the Yale Summer Program in Astrophysics: yspa.yale.edu. They have a two-week online course followed by four weeks of doing astrophysics and data science at Yale. And they do other stuff like field trips, etc… It just started last year, so it’s not as well known.

Does anyone know when rejections/acceptances come out?

Hi there! Are there any Pakistant students who got accepted into RSI? I’m thinking of applying this year. Oh, and does anyone know the deadline? I couldn’t find it on the website

@insertcleverpun Last year the rejection/acceptances came out March 17th. It might be slightly earlier because it’s the second year of online applications, but you never know.

@bultaereone You would have to ask Ms. Ballestero. Apparently, each country has it’s own schedule.

Hi everyone! This is my first post. First of all, I go to one of the worst schools in the state maybe country (average ACT: 17-24), I am a student of extremely low income, I have a brother and sister both are mentally disabled from which the government gives us 16k a year just because we care for them and we live off of that. Im a first generation U.S citizen (both parents immigrated from Mexico) and my parents are very religious. My grades are not the best: 3.6 GPA, there not the best because family problems really intervene in my life such as my parents are both 60 years old and are both fight way too much (abusive marriage) and they would of divorced 12 years ago had it not been because of them being dedicated to religion which does not believe in divorce. My siblings have to go to clinic every other week because of disability, and I did not try in school much because my parents wanted me to get out of HS and become full time preacher. Life is getting harder and I love love science so much. My dream goal for 2017 is to go to MIT RSI which seems like a dream only, I don’t know what to do because I don’t believe I have a chance to get in like the rest of the of the compettition. The only reason I found out was because I looked up science programs, my school does not tell us anything about programs outside of school so I had no idea that there were so many programs, fairs, competitions I could of joined years ago. Now I’m a junior, summer research assistant at a university, 3 AP classes taken, rest honors, my school offers AP only to juniors and seniors. Love physics. What can I do now, can I get in someway?

^^ I’m sorry for your hardship. You should know that RSI typically only accepts at most one candidate from each state. Some of the more populated states might have more than one (ca, tx, fl etc.) but every candidate selected has extraordinary credentials and is someone RSI expects to be a future leader in the field of scientific research. Unless you have stellar academics and test scores, terrific recs, and a track record of demonstrated success in scientific research or competitions, your chances of success are no better than the overall 4% admittance rate. In other words, RSI is not likely to select you as the top candidate from your state.

When you apply to colleges, however, your low income and personal struggles will be taken into account so don’t lose heart. Good luck!

Does anyone know if grammatical errors will count against you? I just realized that I had two major errors that I didn’t see while I was editing the essays.

Can anybody chance me please?

Here are my stats
4.86 Weighted GPA (4.0 unweighted)

SNHS member (founder and president at my school)
NHS member
CSF member
AP Scholar with Distinction

35 on the ACT

800 in chemistry, physics and math 2
740 in world history

4 on World History (self-studied)
5 on Computer Science (self-studied), European History, Spanish

Currently taking: AP Calc BC, AP Chemistry, AP Physics C, AP US History, AP Music Theory

I self studied for F=ma (skipped into AP physics as a result) and missed USAPHO cutoff by 1 question (as in if I had gotten a 14 instead of a 13 on the F=ma I would have gone to USAPHO).
;(

Plan to go to the physics olympiad Summer camp this year.

AIME qualifier last year. Almost made USAJMO.

Im the head of science fair projects at my school.

Probably in the top 2% but my school doesn’t do ranking.

I did some research at MIT (worked with them on a couple graduate projects since freshman year)

Participated in hackathon at Berkeley but didn’t win anything.

Fluent in Java, C#, C++, Python,(self-taught in all), proficient in Mathematica

Founded Philosophy Club
Founded Electrical Engineering club (Since Freshman year)

JV Volleyball Freshman and Sophomore year

Run the Physics Bowl team (started it this year. Our school isn’t great in science)

Interned for research at a local university.

I’m doing research right now for the Siemens Science Fair.

Summer enrichment/research (mainly enrichment) camp at another local university.

White male from a small town in Northern California (if that makes a difference)

Field: Computer Science or Physics

Do I have a chance?

Sorry I need to make a correction my world history score was a 760. I’m also in Mu Alpha Theta and ran the Chinese club last year. Also proficient in MATLAB.

Oh yeah. AP Language as well this year.

Just wondering… Why do people ask for others to “chance” them? Nobody here knows whether you’ll get in or not. The same thing happens with college “chance” threads; people will either make you over-confident, or they’ll find some flaw in what you’ve done and make you wonder why you even tried. People asking for chances on college confidential should be less worried about one application and more worried about their need for validation from random strangers on the internet.

Also @LeFrancais did you actually run the Chinese club as a white male from California…

Has anyone been able to access the CEE website? I’ve tried since yesterday, but I think it crashed.

Never mind, the website is working now.

Does anyone know for sure when the results come out?

@Anonymous1418 All we know is that it’s sometime in March, not sure about the exact date.

I got a 1520 on my PSAT but a weak 34 ACT. I also submitted a copy of my MIT research paper as well to RSI. I think I have like a 50/50 chance, but my dad also works at MIT, so it might boost me quite a bit.

I got my new and higher SAT score. Does anybody know if RSI accepts update?

Are we allowed to update them on new scores?
