i guess since you got a 36 on ACT and 800 on Math 2, you should just send that. Don’t send the SAT.
I’ve been in contact with the professor that mentored me during my research internship for a recommendation, but it seems like he’s super busy and I’m not sure if he’ll be able to meet the deadline. If I email RSI admissions, do you think they would give him an extension? Because they said that if you had a serious research internship, a recommendation from your mentor is basically a must.
^ ignore please! Thankfully, I just got into contact with him (he was on a vacation)
Anyone have an idea about the ACT superscore or sending in AMC and AIME scores from this February before acceptance results? I would guess it would be too late.
Also, I took the AP Comp Sci test without taking the class, but got a 4. Would it be detrimental to submit this?
I’m not sure if it’s possible to send scores to RSI after the deadline. If it’s not anything outstanding, it probably won’t make a huge difference anyway. Focus on making your application impressive as a whole.
I personally think 4 is fine. I self-studied AP Stats and got a 4, and I’m submitting that.
@ritikulous Thanks for the clarification
I got a 3 on AP seminar my freshmen year. Is it still necessary to report all your ap scores?
Best wishes for the New Year and good luck to all applicants!
@victorchang Thx!
Would a (relatively) bad score on the AMC seriously hurt my application? I have research experience and good EC’s, but not a lot of major awards (and didn’t qualify for AIME either).
Edit: It’s an ok score, just not an AIME qualifying score
@cwyerts It might not be the best idea to include AMC. Keep in mind that there are a lot of other applicants who don’t have major awards as well.
On a unrelated note, my school doesn’t offer AP courses to freshmen and sophomores, so I’m taking my first APs this year. How will RSI know this? Through references from my counselor?
@Radiant thanks for the help.
@victorchang my AMC is pretty borderline, so idk. Also, about your AP courses, if you dont work it in to the questions you can mention it to one of your counselors or teachers to put it in. Generally, they are very glad to help with this sort of thing.
Award wise, my biggest award is qualifying for USAJMO last year. I have some programming experience with USACO (silver) and took a coursera course in machine learning, also got 5 on AP CS.
Anyways, I did research this summer on inflammation and cancer (biology) but right now my two subjects are computational biology and combinatorics.
I’m not sure if I should change combinatorics to something like Biology-Inflammation because I like both subjects a lot, and would be happy with either one of them. If I wrote the first essay prompt about math I would talk about why I enjoy doing math, but if I wrote about inflammation I would have real research experience to back up my passion for it. Anyone have any ideas on what would be the better option? Also, choosing inflammation wouldn’t let me make a direct connection to my biggest award, while choosing combinatorics would.
Thanks!
@ic3kreem I think that they would understand, given your awards, that you are strong in CS and biology. My suggestion would be to show that a) you have a passion for it and b) you can learn quickly if you come up against something you don’t know. I would pick whichever one you are more enthused about, and I think that is what they are looking for.
@victorchang I would try to get into contact with your counselor and maybe ask him/her if they could slide in a line or two mentioning that just so RSI knows that you took the most rigorous classes that were actually possible in your school. Or you could write one or two lines about it in the Comments section in the Secondary School section of the application on Slideroom.
@tothecosmos Oh yea, I forgot that there a section on the app left for that. Thx so much!
@victorchang No problem!
Thanks for the advice!
Another concern I had was that I would “waste” making USAJMO if I chose CS-computational biology and Biology-Inflammation since none of those are directly related to math. But, maybe making JMO isn’t “good enough” to do math research just yet, so it wouldn’t be too bad?
idk lol
How are you guys submitting your standarized test scores? RSI wants the official copy but when I try to get the PDF of my SAT subject test scores, the PDF says “not official”.
Also how are you guys organizing your award and accomplishment section?
@gkdudtlffj
I was originally planning to just send the PDF score reports. I think college board makes you pay for the “Official” one by making you pay for score sends. I dont think RSI does score sends anyhow, so you’re good. Again, that’s just what I was going to do
GL on your apps!
