Hey! So I will be transferring to UNLV this fall as a sophomore and I am looking to join a sorority. Until recently I had been told that they will look at your GPA and that those grades can impact your ability to join certain sororities. My high school GPA was a 2.85 and my transfer GPA is a 2.75. I know that the minimum GPA to rush is a 2.5 and I meet that requirement, but because both of my GPAs aren’t the best will I have any chance of getting into a good sorority? I’m friends with one of the girls on the Panhellenic council, but I don’t know if that will help in any way.
Thanks!
IMO, I would focus on adjusting to college & your academics before worrying about a sorority. You have 4 years of college to join Greek life, it can wait.
Grades are VERY important to sororities. They want to pledge women who will help uphold and raise their cumulative GPA. Often they help you build good study habits with required study halls for members under a certain GPA. Sometimes the minimum to rush is 2.5, but the sorority’s own minimum to pledge is higher. Since you are uncertain, why not contact that friend on Panhellenic and ask her what she thinks? You could even call the Greek adviser. Looks like Melyssa Barrera would be your contact at 702-895-5565. Can you schedule your time so that you can get to class, study, and handle the many sorority activities? It might be better for you to wait until your sophomore year, as sta3565 suggests, get settled into college and establish a good GPA, and then add sorority life. I would not wait past sophomore year, however. You’d be losing too much fuN!
