Rushing Alabama Sororities as a Sophomore

Hi I am a freshman at the moment at the University of Alabama and I am really looking forward to rushing as a Sophomore in the fall. I did not rush freshman year due to having a low gpa, and now I have a 3.7 GPA at Alabama. I am from the North, and I am wondering do I have any chance of getting into a good sorority at Alabama this fall? I have recs to every house, but I am afraid because I am from the north, and that I am a sophomore, that houses will cut me right off the bat. Advice?

Being from out of state is no big deal - even being from the north. There are only a couple of sororities that take a majority of in-state students; the rest pretty much follow along the university’s stat of about 60% out of state. Your much better college grades are a huge PLUS! Since you have a college GPA, the sororities will look more at that than your high school grades. You WILL need to keep a totally open mind - not because of being out of state, but because of being a sophomore. Be open to ANY of the sororities. It’s a mutual selection process…sort of. The sororities have more choice than you will. But your good grades are highly in your favor.

Have you made friends who are in sororities? Let them know you are going to sign up for rush. Did you attend the sorority preview day a couple of weeks ago? If so, that’s in your favor. If not, go on uapanhellenic.com NOW and fill out the registration form. You do not have to pay the fee right now. Once you pay the fee, you’ll be officially registered for recruitment, but not until then.

The reason I say sign up NOW is because sororities are hosting invitation-only spring parties this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (April 4-5-6). Tell your sorority friends that you are planning to sign up and look forward to seeing them during recruitment - don’t be stalkerish or imply that because you know them you expect a bid. Keep it friendly and non-committal! If you can’t go to the parties or don’t get an invitation, don’t worry - these parties are not that big a deal.
