I am pretty set on going to the University of Alabama next year and am curious how hard rushing is there. I'm from out of state and am worried that it will make it harder for me to get into a good sorority. I'm also wondering how many community service hours I will need to look good during rush. Are there any secrets to rushing that will help?

I don’t know much - but a friend was from OOS. She rushed. She was invited back to the maximum amount - like 12? Her three roommates were OOS. One was invited back to four or so - none of the ones she wanted. The other two - not at all as I recall. One of the four pledged - my friend - and was very happy with her outcome. I know it was stressful and there were lots of events and lots of girls. That’s about all I know. I think rec letters were very important.

Rushing as a freshman is the easiest way to do it, as sophomore rushing is typically looked down upon. Try to get rec letters for every chapter - see if you know any sorority women who can help you here. Make sure you dress appropriately for rush events- I really can’t stress that enough. Badly or inappropriately dressed PNMs don’t get high scores.

Being OOS will not hurt you, but it does decrease your chances of knowing women already in the chapters at Bama. The sororities there are all pretty big - its going to be stressful and a little confusing at times. Check out greekchat for a greek-centered forum.

Go to GreekChat, there are threads upon threads upon threads about Bama rush. You need minimum 1, preferably 2 rec letters for ALL chapters. Dress appropriately, act proper and in the appropriate manner, and maximize your options.

55% of this year’s entering freshman class at Bama was OOS; approximately 65% of the sorority bids this year went to OOS girls. In other words, the numbers bear out that being from OOS does not make it impossible to successfully rush at Bama like so many people will want to tell you. Bama is attracting accomplished students from OOS and the sororities are looking to add them to their membership rosters.

You should post your question in the University of Alabama forum.
