I have not really thought about it much, but the idea has crossed my mind a few times. I am currently a second semester freshman, and I feel like my social life so far has been very disappointing. I actually know a lot of people from my high school here, but I've kinda failed at meeting people outside of my high school social group that I can hang out with on a regular basis. On weekends I get so bored I feel like scooping my eyes out with a spoon, and I eventually just end up hanging out with the same 2 or 3 dudes from my high school (which is getting REALLY old, trust me).

I live in a dorm with 8 people (including myself), and 3 of them are in frats. I've noticed that those 3 seem like the happiest people on the planet. They are always out and rarely in the rooms, and I am beginning to envy the numerous random texts/calls/facebook messages they seem to get every second.

Now, I never even considered joining a frat my first semester, I go to a large state school which has several frats of all types, and I never even bothered going to any rush events or anything like that. However, I am now a few weeks into my second semester, and this whole social thing is slappin me in the face. My dad was in a frat, and he actually said that it really isn't worth it, but that was 30 years ago, and fraternities have definitely changed I can assume. He was in PKA at SDSU, which would probably be the one I would choose to rush for, but then again I haven't looked into any other fraternities.

FINALLY, my question is: What is the general attitude toward students rushing as Sophomores? If by the end of this year I REALLY REALLY want to join one, should I consider rushing for the first semester of my sophomore year, or will I stick out like a sore thumb because of what grade I'm in? Is it common for sophomores to rush?

Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Fraternities don't care about sophomores rushing. I would suggest you see how things shape up at the beginning of next year, and if you find yourself in the same position, I would rush. Just make sure you research the frats beforehand. I was considering rushing at one frat, but the more parties I went to, the more I realized that the frat was "trashy." One of my older friends who was a junior convinced me not to join a fraternity because I "would be going to the same party for the rest of my college life."

President of my roommates frat pledged second semester sophomore year so don't let class get in the way. As a matter of fact since I'm transferring I won't be pledging til I'm a sophomore.

I think it depends on the school; a ton of us (myself included) rushed and had no problems getting bids. I would say that sophomore year would be the last year to rush if you want to be in the Greek system.

Do people generally rush as Freshmen? I suppose it depends on the school, but I plan on going to a state flagship and would probably go dorms first year, but want to live in a house sophomore year. Do people usually pledge first year and then move in second or just rush as a sophomore? Thanks for any info.

Yes, a majority of students pledge as freshmen and live in the house sophomore year. I will say that most of the sophomores who were rushing were transfer students.

Who is more likely to know the attitude at your school? Random people on the internet that don't even know the name of your school, or the 3 people you live with in frats?

Fraternities are still worth it. And it's not a big deal if someone pledges as a sophomore, yeah they're usually transfer students but we've had a few kids who just didn't choose to rush until their second year.

i agree with the transfer thing being a big part of it, thats whay im doing it as a sophomore, if I did hate the chapter at my school (all guidos) I would try to get pledging done here so I'm a brother if I get into my new school (I went to high school with 5 of the brothers of chapter at the school I want to transfer to and I was friends with them in high school, so I assume I'd probably fit in with their frat)
