I have been into Rutgers Business School (New Brunswick) for 3 months and I got into University of Michigan last week for literature, arts, and sciences. I plan on majoring in finance and accounting at either school. With no guarantees that I would get into Ross preferred or even after my freshman year, I need advice. Is Michigan worth $132k more than Rutgers when I am probably going to have to get my MBA. So basically it comes down to Rutgers Business School + 132k + guarantee of studying business vs Michigan (one of the best universities in the country).

I hate to say it but Rutgers, unless your parents are able to and willing to pay the extra 132k.

Yeah, well if I could get help from family members and come up with the money. Thing is I probably need my MBA and my parents have my sister to send through school too. As you can see from my account I love Rutgers as my dad went there and he has a solid job in NYC from it. Still, I would be the first in my family to go to a school like Michigan and it even has my dad pushing me toward Michigan.

Fact 1: You love Rutgers
Fact 2: Rutgers will cost $130,000 less than Michigan
Fact 3: Money is tight
Fact 4: Ross is not certain to accept you

I say go for Rutgers.

Why assume an MBA? I know many successful people without it, than with it. And most of those I know who pursued it? were sponsored by their employer. Get out in the real world, get some experience before you “default spend” any money on a masters!

I’m senior mgmt without an MBA (and it hasn’t held me back). My boss only has a BA from Toledo! for cryin out loud (I’ve worked with him for 4 years and I only found this out while recently discussing D’s school choices). All this hand wringing and gnashing of teeth over degree cred, top 5 schools in this, top 10 schools in that, MBA’s etc… is way overblown for the real world. Take the Rutgers degree and run while laughing all the way to the bank!
