Being from NJ, I'd have to pay in-state tuition for RU, which is about 25k cheaper than UM. I've also been admitted to the Honors program and the business school at RU (though I might not actually take up a major in anything business-related down the line).

UM was my target school and when I visited, I loved it. They haven't gotten back to me about financial aid but more than likely I won't get any.

Money is not really and issue, but in these times (and especially if I want to go to grad school) it's better to think about things from that perspective as well.

I'd really like to get some feedback that can hopefully make this decision slightly easier. Thanks in advance!

I’m in sort of the same situation; I got into rutgers honors +business school, and I also got into Michigan honors. I can afford OOS tuition thankfully, so I would really prefer to go to Michigan because it’s just a much much better school. Furthermore, getting into grad school would be easier if you do well at a school like Michigan as opposed to a school like Rutgers. Even in NJ, Michigan is more prestigious. If you can afford it, go to Michigan. Not to mention, if you manage to get into Ross business school, thats one of the best in the nation.

Hi, I am also from NJ, but I would strongly recommend that you go to Umich even if you can’t afford it. I have seen way too many friends who have turned down great schools to go to Rutgers for their full ride, and they regret it tremendously now. They all say that Rutgers is not challenging at all and that they literally feel like they’re wasting their time. Michigan would be much more academically demanding, but in the end it is definitely worth it, especially if you’re planning to go into business. Unless you have been accepted to the Rutgers pharmacy department and plan in pursuing pharmacy, I would highly recommend Umich over Rutgers. Also if you plan to go to grad school, Michigan would look better on your record. Rutgers and Michigan are both public schools, but they are so different. Besides, Rutgers’ campus isn’t the best campus I would spend my college life in. Hope that helped.

I am also from NJ and I suggest your broaden your horizons and get out of NJ and experience the great midwest!!! UM is a great school and Ann Arbor is a great college town. Part of your education is meeting people from all over the world…and UM will provide that wonderful diversity along with a top notch academic education!!!

Thanks for your input! I enrolled at Michigan (and my parents are happy about that too). The only thing that would be remotely appealing about going to RU would be the cost - I had visited RU a few times (to see old friends) and I hated it. It just did not feel like a campus at all. Michigan, on the other hand, was really fantastic.

My son was in a quandry between UMaryland and U Mich.even though we were in state for Rutgers. He loved U Mich also and enrolled. Best wishes to both of you!

“Unless you have been accepted to the Rutgers pharmacy department and plan in pursuing pharmacy, I would highly recommend Umich over Rutgers.”

I’m planning on pursuing a career in pharmacy … and I’m deciding between U Mich and Rutgers … my parents finally agreed to let me go to U Mich, although it’s going to be very difficult financially … is it not worth it? I’m in in-state for Rutgers, therefore, it’s much cheaper.

Location, location, location!!! Pfizer, J&J and Merck (the three largest American Pharmaceutical firms) are all headquartered within a one hour drive of Rutgers. Michigan may be ranked higher, but Rugters is still excellent and VERY accessible. If you have the money to attend Michigan without causing too much financial strain on your folks, go for it. But if money is tight, for Pharmacy, go to Rutgers.

I’m from Jersey also. I picked U of M over Rutgers. U of M is a better, more challenging school. The atmosphere is great, and the pride here is awesome.
