Rowan has a very different feel. It’s still not a fantastic campus, but it’s more cohesive than Rutgers. I can’t get my kid interested in Rutgers - even said the College Ave area is ugly. Oh well. Nice to get accepted (finally) but we can pay a little more for one of the out of state schools she actually liked. Rowan would have been less but it didn’t appeal enough to make it worth it.
Do you know if Honors College Scholarships have traditionally gone out with honors college notifications?
My kid wrote off OSU shortly after the “deferral” happened, but she was still disappointed.
No, typically a few days later.
Probably mid next week.
I mentioned it in an earlier message but did a tour on Monday. Was going to do the bus tour but got off and did our own tour. S is an engineering major so went to Busch. We walked around the campus and saw the student center and dinning hall. Then we went to College Avenue and did the same. These two campuses are where he’d be most often so it was important to see them up close. We drove through Livingston but didn’t get out because the only thing there for him was the basketball arena.
I think by not visiting all five campuses made the campus seem less scattered. He may never need to go to Douglas or Cook so why spend time there.
I can honestly say this is the first time I have heard anyone compare Rowan to Rutgers NB. Perhaps Rutgers Camden competes for students w/ Rowan; even R- Newark is considered far more competitive. I doubt many students applying to the flagship, NB, have Rowan on their lists. The only in-state public school I suspect has any crossover w/ R-NB is TCNJ- even it is very different, but closer academically (in some disciplines)
I agree. We live in south Jersey & S22 only applied to Rutgers NB in-state. He said he’s not going to Rowan so didn’t even apply.
Roman was private school and then become state school ran out private $.
Roman has medical school there.
My son likes Roman better then Rutgers Engineering area.
He gets in both both mostly we are not going to both – we are in nj and he wants out of NJ.
When you compare Rowan with merit to Rutgers without and see a newer freshman dorm, a great engineering program, and a walkable campus it’s a shame that more don’t seriously consider it. And quite frankly, your attitude is somewhat offensive to kids who do go there or who consider it. New Jersey has options besides tcnj and Rutgers.
Hi, I am a Rutgers alum. My son is currently there, my daughter was just accepted. We actually went on a walking tour today… College Ave was buzzing all afternoon, it was so great to see!
Rutgers is Big 10. What this means is that all students have access to use the libraries from all the other Big 10 schools. 2 years ago students were able to take online classes at other Big 10 schools virtually (not sure if this is still an option). Big 10 is big sports, but it is so much more than that!
Rutgers is a leading research university, known worldwide.
Rutgers is a short train ride from NYC, the greatest city on earth. My senior year I did an internship in NYC. The opportunities are endless.
Rutgers has 750 clubs (sports, academic, social, etc) for all students to be a part of.
etc, etc, etc
UDel seems like a great school, we liked touring it a lot, however, you do not get the opportunities at UDel that you would get at Rutgers! Walking around with my daughter today at RU, all I could think of was that I would go back in a heartbeat!
Rowan was Glassboro State College & changed name due to a large private donation. It is still up & coming vs Rutgers NB but too close to home for my S22.
You should check out the You Tube video from America’s Got Talent Extreme the other night. Rowan alumni formed a company and put together an amazing laser lights show with drones. They even got the golden buzzer from Simon Cowell. These are some smart men who will be very successful someday. We toured both Rowan and Rutgers for Engineering and were much more impressed with Rowan. My son picked Rowan out of the two and has no regrets. So, yes, the two schools can be compared, atleast in Engineering to my knowledge. Heres the link for AGT episode.
Curious how long after acceptance you receive financial aid package and/or honors notification? My kiddo was called yesterday about acceptance into Mason Gross acting BFA.
If I said the same about Rutgers versus Princeton, would this be “offensive” to Rutgers students? There are far fewer schools separating these two NJ schools than ranked between Rutgers & Rowan. Both share the same Carnegie Classification and are AAU members. The same cannot be said of Rowan; it is not an attitude; what I wrote is merely factual. Student profiles, school resources,… can be confirmed via publicly available data. I said nothing disparaging about Rowan. I am confident impressive students are enrolled at Rowan, Princeton, Rutgers and every community college - none of which is relevant to whether these schools can realistically be considered peer institutions. Frankly, and this is not a criticism, it is a stretch to consider Rowan a National University given only 43 out-of-state freshman enrolled in 2020.
I have to agree with @NJFather. People point out that University X is ranked higher academically than University Y all the time and I don’t think that should be taken as offensive to students of Y.
Every institution has smart and motivated kids and each has something in its favor that attracted students to it (could be academics, faculty, research, campus, dorms, facilities, sports, cost, location, student body, clubs, acceptance rate, etc). But that does not make all institutions equal.
My undergraduate alma mater is far from a T50 and I had a great time there. Very proud of it! But I also have no issue with someone pointing to a T50 college and saying it’s better than the one I went to, because that’s just objectively true and doesn’t lessen the quality of the education or experience I received.
I have both a Rutgers and TCNJ grad, their rankings tend to be pretty similar for NJ schools. Both graduated from the business school, TCNJ grad is younger and has a higher salary, but Rutgers grad is a CPA.
My other daughter is at TCNJ and we never had these admissions issues or any issues for that matter. Such a good school with a great reputation. Starting to think way better than Rutgers.
I don’t recall any admissions issues with Rutgers, and getting a junior year internship was much easier there, finding employment after graduation was a piece of cake (although accounting might just be easy?). My son utilized his ties with his business fraternity at TCNJ to find an internship/employment (finance). They both loved their college experience.
Rutgers has a new admissions portal this year and it’s been an issue (vs last year and 4 years ago). @Mjkacmom
That’s fine but even our guidance counselor says you can’t get through to them. You would think they would be able to.
