Does anyone know how serious the marching band is at Rutgers? Because I don't consider myself a serious musician, and I'm basically a novice player. But I was in marching band this year and REALLY loved it. I would love to continue in college. Also, I was in the front ensemble (vibraphone), so I've never marched before :o

Know a girl who did it her freshman year (clarinet), but gave it up this year because she wanted to participate in other clubs & activities. (She did enjoy it last year). During football season, practice is daily and they also practice in non-football season. She was a good, not great musician, in high school.

Joining the Rutgers University Marching Band has been the best decision I’ve made here at Rutgers. I played Xylophone my senior year of High school and I just fell in love with Marching band (very familiar to your story!). Unfortunately there is no pit so I picked up the Clarinet and had to learn how to march. I know it sucks not being able to pick up your old instrument but trust me, it’s worth it. I literally picked up almost everything at band camp. Marching is not hard but because I literally picked up the clarinet 5 weeks before band camp it was very frustrating not being able to play much. But now that I’m familiar with my instrument, my second band camp was a piece of cake. I am definitely doing next season and will do everything I can to do it my senior year.

Have any questions? I have a lot of answers!

Thanks, jalcazar! That was really helpful. Wow, yeah our stories are basically the same haha. Yeah it kind of sucks that there’s no pit but I just started to learn to play the snare drum so I would probably play that if I joined the band (it is my life’s dream to become a snare drummer, not sure why. But I don’t question it). Can you give me some insight into the intensity of the Marching Band? Like, what are the expectations placed upon you? Is it a laid back kind fo atmosphere or more stringent?
Also, I read somewhere that you can get course credits by being in the band? Can you maybe elaborate on this?

(Sorry, I asked a lot of questions)
