I am most likely going to Rutgers New Brunswick for my undergrad. My ultimate goal is to be a cardiologist so I will have to go to medical school. I like science a lot and I am good at it. What major should I choose for undergrad? My parents say that if the chance that I do not get accepted anywhere to med school than my future will be ruined so choose a major that you can work right after it like engineering. Except I hate engineering. Any science majors at this school where I can work right after and make about 50k+ a year? (No engineering or english or law) So yes I will be premed. My parents suggested business like accounting and idk if thats a good idea to appeal to medical schools when i apply... So please give me majors.

Pre-Med is a track where you take pre-req courses required for medical school.

Any major can get into medical school, however it depends on how you do in your science and major courses that determine a part of acceptance. For example, you can major in accounting while taking your pre-reqs. Your grades will show how you are prepared for medical school and as a student. As for not getting accepted into medical school 1st time, you can always take post bacc classes to boost gpa, or do a masters program.

Most pre-med students do biology or cell biology & neuroscience because their major requires them to already take the classes medical school requires plus courses that you will see in medical school. Most of these students just really want to get into medical school and impressing med school admissions is a good thing.

Working in a field that you enjoy should be something you should major in along with the money factor.

Also, not everyone gets into medical school because it is competitive, but you will see 85% of your classmates as pre-med. You might also might want to look up the two different kinds of doctors (MD and DO). One attends allopathic and the other attends osteophatic medical schools. MD is significantly harder to get in compared to DO but both are graduate as doctors.

There is also the option of the medical schools in the Caribbean.

So choose a major you would be interested in. Research SAS and SEBS majors, along with pre-reqs for medical schools.

shipponz is right. About ~44,000 students apply to med schools and only ~17,000 get in. There is a correlation between the SAT scores and MCAT scores and if you did well on SAT then you will most likely do well on MCAT. This website lists all US medical schools, # of applicants and acceptances…Use it as it is very helpful.
My son double majored in Neuroscience and Spanish and got accepted to a US medical school. Some US medical schools love humanity majors so you might want to think aboutdouble majoring. I agree with your parents…Don’t do biology alone as you will be stuck with a degree that you cannot do much with in case you don’t get in medical school. Do a double major even if it takes you an extra year to finish.
