Rutgers Newark

How come no one talks about the Newark Campus. My D is going in the fall she is very excited. She was accepted to 5 on the NB campus but chose the Newark Campus. Anyone have good place to stay in Newark for a visit. and does anyone now when you can move into the doorms

Good luck all study hard learn any and everything but most of all you have to have fun so that you can make memories

Wait, if she was accepted to 5 on the NB campus, then why did she choose Newark?

was offered more money and was accepted to the honors adn ba/jd program

Contrary to what many people will say, the Newark campus is very nice. Once you step into the main quad area you would not even know that you are in Newark, or any other big city. It is a hub for many commuter students so there is less of a sense of campus community, but this is not to say that there are not many students around. The campus of NJIT and RU Newark are basically combined and the area includes the business and law school. The law school has a great library if she needs a place to study. It is an easy commute to NYC or other locations if she wants to get out of town, and contrary to what people may say, there is not that much crime in the school area. There is also a close relationship with UMDNJ if she is interested in health care. Of the students that I know of who went there, they were all happy and felt that they recieved a quality education. Good luck.

Thanks Kono I am not worried about her getting a quality education I am sure that she will. I was looking for information on the city and places to stay and things to do while we are there and move in day. the orintation is the 2 of august and we will have to drive back up to move her in. we are flying up on the second. by the way we live in TEXAS so it is not just right there it would have been nice to have moving day and orintation all the same week. but thank you for the post she is very excited

There is student housing through the university in the immediate area and there are many houses rented by students who rent rooms. I am sure there are postings for this, but I cannot give you a location. Many students commute from the surrounding area, and this is an option but I would not recommend it for a freshman. Good luck.

I was refering to a hotel for us to stay in when we visit and while we are there moving her in. I know she is guarente housing so that is a load off of our minds her daddy is worried about the city around the university as far as the safety factor and that kind of thing you are so nice to post to a mom that is worried about kiddo

I know the Robert Treat hotel is close by and many people stay there. You may get a discount if you tell them that your daughter will be going to the college. It is next to the NJPAC which is a spectacular concert hall.

I've been admitted to both rutgers campuses. If I decide to attend, Newark would definitely be my choice simply because of its proximity to nyc.
When I visit the campus, I am going to stay in queens, take the path to jersey city and then whatever transit to newark.

that was an added attraction to newark with my daughter she loves new york city

New Brunswick is better in my opinion. Urban, but still safe, big, bustling, and just a short train ride from Philadelphia and NYC, with TONS of job and internship opportunities.

The train goes into NB also through the newark stop I believe, so don't let that be the deciding point between New and NB. To be honest, I'd much rather go to NB than Newark. My cousin was at NJIT for a bit and I used to visit him a bunch up in Newark. The area is very...meh. New Brunswick is a wee bit safer and for the most part is better recognized.
