I'm an incoming EMSOP student and was wondering of the prospect of later getting my MBA in pharmaceutical management...

Is it a bad idea/waste of time getting a PharmD if I'm mainly interested in the pharmaceutical industry from more of a business perspective? My main reason for going for my PharmD, besides being a great program/school a RU, is to have a relatively safe job with a nice salary in case my business adventures are absolute fail... I have AP Macro/Micro passing exams (4-5), so I plan on taking a lot of economics courses as my Pharm electives, idk if that would even matter, though.

Is this a logical path?

Actually, EMSOP recently announced plans to implement a PharmD/MBA dual degree program.

Would it be too late for me (as an inc firstyear)?

and is there anything I could read up on about this?

thanks for the reply!

No, it wouldn’t be too late for you. There isn’t too much information on it right now…they’re working on organizing it/setting up a curriculum. EMSOP will send out emails about it – I’m anticipating more news about the dual degree programs next year. Sorry I can’t really tell you much more than that, haha.

I’m considering chemical engineering with the pharmacy option, I believe it was started last year (or maybe this year). It’s a 5 year program, and I guess it’s geared towards creating pharmaceuticals. There’s also an MBA you can get (for the PharmD and Engineering programs), but you need a certain gpa to be accepted into it. It would be nice if I could work for J&J or Roche, I could literally walk to one of their research plants from where I live haha.

As someone said before, Rutgers Pharmacy is in the beginning stages of instituting a Pharm.D/PhD and Pharm.D/MBA program - but who knows how long that will take. Rutgers has a tendency to make everything take forever, so I would not bet money on the fact that you would have the option to get an MBA by the time you enter the school of pharmacy.

I am also interested in pursuing a career in industry: there is the Rutgers fellowship program that you can apply to after graduating pharmacy school. It basically places you in a co-op/residency esque environment for one to two years so that you can learn the ins and outs of a particular field: regulatory affairs, business intelligence, marketing, drug information, medical writing, etc. Fellowships are your best bet to get a job in industry.

It is extremely competitive though. If you are more interested in the research side, I would suggest that you start doing research here at Rutgers with either the pharmacy school or the chemistry/biology departments.
