Rutgers Pharm vs. BC

BC (225) vs. Rutgers Pharm (100)

Love BC, dislike Rutgers.
Not super interested in pharm, but would NOT want to go into Rutgers SAS.
If go to Rutgers, I will then go to med school after 6 year program.
BC is great- beautiful, small classes, boston, intellectual campus
Rutgers- cheap, huge classes, profs/admin don't care about students, awful environment (more party centric, less academic class)

Overall BC is risky. I haven't gotten my FA package yet, but I'm assuming I won't get anything. It's doable, but my parents would have to take out an additional loan. I feel badly about letting them do that though.

RU- great job prospects with high paying pharm job
BC- more expensive, then tack on med school too
I'm conflicted.

Bumpppppp.

Okay…reasonable concerns and options.

First, sit with mom and dad and have a heart to heart. Be honest. Let them be honest.

Write down on a legal pad two columns of the plus and minus factors for each school and evaluate the cost benefit analysis. Nobody can do this for you. You must do this with mom and dad.

Now on a level of sharing an opinion, I have a view of the world like this:

generally, if you are serious about medical school, law school or grad school: SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR THAT.

Pretty campus and small classes do matter…but its also highly subjective and at the end of the day, if you are more focused on getting into medical school and not being burdened with HUGE debt before you get started, you have to place those items lower on the scale of importance.

You will get into medical school from both schools. Good medical schools. If your MCAT and GPA are high enough.

On the other hand, go with your heart. BC is awesome and so is Boston. But the cost may be that you have to work for 2 years or so after graduation to help reduce your debt/mom and dad’s debt so you can afford medical school. That isnt so bad, considering medical schools often LIKE a little gravitas and work experience anyway…maturity…kids who are so committed they are sure of their decision and they worked for a few years to afford it…and gain some worldly experience outside of a book.

Nobody here can decide for you. I see the value of both decisions. What caught my attention is your lack of interest in pharmacology…when we all know that meds…pills…are the PRIMARY source of treatment for patients. How does that comport with your desire to attend medical school? What kind of medicine are you considering?

Good luck.

Thanks for replying. I’m interested in specializing in anesthesia. Now that I think about it, pharmacy could set me up for a career as an anesthesiologist due to the way the drugs impact the body. I just don’t want to be sitting in a pharmacy for more than 5-10 years. I’d go mad.
