rutgers pharm vs. northeastern pharm

i was just accepted to rutgers pharm and northeastern pharm

northeastern gave me $20k/freshman year and $10k/full semester after that.
but the tuition+dorm is about $50k/yr...
i also got into the honors program

i haven't been notified of any scholarships from rutgers yet!
i received the honors program packet but there's no guarantee that i'll get accepted to the honors program

i'm trying to come up with pros & cons of each pharmD program (both are 0-6)
can anyone help me continue the list below please!? :)

so far, i have....

NORTHEASTERN PROS:
-new dorms for honors freshman + upperclass
-co-op

NORTHEASTERN CONS:
-expensive

RUTGERS PROS:
-close to home (i'm instate)

RUTGERS CONS:
-no co-op :(

Waiting to hear back from rutgers pharm, really hoping to get in.
I visited Northeastern over the summer and I think another of it’s pros is that is located in the heart of a medical-oriented area (hospitals, Harvard med school nearby). Also, the T is a very convenient form of transportation and there are lots of things to do for entertainment in the Boston area (shopping, museums). I heard from a friend that the food there is great.
I also visited Rutgers a few months ago. The campus itself is huge, but I guess it wouldn’t be that big of a deal since you’re probably going to take classes in only a couple buildings. The tour didn’t stop by the pharm school so I dropped by afterwards by myself. To be honest, I was pretty underwhelmed. It was a small, plain building and I only looked around the first floor, but it seemed pretty blah. But then again, all the labs and other stuff are probably on the higher levels and the building probably doesn’t need to be that big since there are so few pharm students. Another pro of Rutgers is that it is located in NJ where a lot of pharm companies (J&J) are. While they may not have co-ops, I heard internship and research opportunities are great. And of course they are much less expensive lol.

Can you please tell me your stats as i applied to the same 2 programs as well as St. Johns? From my research i would say Rutgers is a better/more well respected program, and cheaper, while Northeastern will probably be a more enjoyable experience due to the location and such. I also thought rutgers would be more apt to give money but based on your present experience who knows?

I am also wondering about the two schools.

So far I have:

Northeastern University Pros:
-Located in Boston which is pretty much the heart of everything from entertainment to tons of medical opportunities

-Beautiful green campus despite its location in the city. So you basically get the best of both worlds.

-NE buildings are within walking distance and there is an underground tunnel that connects most buildings.

-Co-op opportunities. You’ll have tons of experience before you graduate

-good food haha

Cons:

expensive tuition

-classes in the summer after your freshman year

-no football team

Rutgers University:

Pros:

-highly respected pharm program

-cheaper tuition

-pharmacy students are really close knit

-tougher to get into/ really competitive, so it’s pretty awesome that you got accepted

-huge campus

-FOOTBALL TEAM! lol

Cons:

no coop

Located in New Jersey (what is there to do?) and is not in the best surrounding neighborhood.

-huge campus (this could also be a con)

I’m still waiting to hear from Rutgers, but I got accepted to Northeastern pharmacy. And can anyone throw URI in the mix?

Hey i’ve gotten into both RU pharm and NU pharm along with USP…

I would be considered in-state for RU, but what is the best choice, especially because NU has co-ops and a better location

Rutgers doesn’t have an honors program for freshman going into pharmacy. I believe you have to be in second year to apply.

Rutgers sends out scholarship notification from Jan-April through postal mail only. Since you already got accepted, you’ll probably hear by mid January.

Northeastern will cost you probably 15k more if rutgers offers you nothing, probably 20k-25k if rutgers gives you a good scholarship. Co-op, while you will make money, you won’t make nearly enough to offset the substantially higher price.

For OOS’s like me, both Rutgers and Northeastern are around the same range (30k). Both are reputable programs, although from what I see on CC, Rutgers seems to be more prestigious. Both offer excellent internships and experience opportunities, but Northeastern allows us to work more to gain more hands-on experience.

@highachiever793

i just checked my URI e-campus and i was accepted!
but the scholarship information/housing was not mentioned.

you should check yours too!

@cherryfilter Congratulations!!

I checked… still no decision. :frowning: They say they’ve received my items, though. But I’m hoping it comes soon! Rutgers and URI are the only two schools I’m still waiting for.

i’m pretty sure it will come out soon  good luck!!

thanks! 10char

I’d say if you want to be traditional pharmacist, go to the school nearest where you might want to get a job. Otherwise, Rutgers seems to have more contacts within the pharmaceutical industry (for research jobs and other non-white coat jobs) and Northeastern, through co-op’s (I assume you would have a related one) might give you an idea early on if that is the type of job you want (keep in mind no summer vacation after the first year). On that note, you could probably apply your first two years of Rutgers credits to one of many other degrees if you decide pharmacy is not for you.

Rutgers has a better reputation than northeastern. you only have to look at the lists of pharmacists in fellowship programs and residency programs to see that rutgers is better represented that northeastern.

As someone said before, if retail is your route, I would suggest that you go to school closest to where you want to work. If you don’t know what to do, I’d go to rutgers. Graduating with less debt is a pretty big deal, but rutgers is definitely pretty academically rigorous - a lot of people fail out

@lurker-
What about if you want to become a hospital pharmacist? Which would be the better school?

And does the pharmacy school you go to really effect where you end up getting a job after you graduate? Are you saying that if you want to work in New York you should go to Rutgers, but if you want to work in Boston you should go to Northeastern? Does that really matter in the end? Just wondering.

highachiever793,
In almost every co-op or intern/residency program (that all PharmD schools do one way or another), if you do well, you are more likely to be hired there for a full time job, rather than someone they don’t know, and I’m sure each school has more nearby opportunities than far away.

That said, you may simply want a school near the big city you would like to hang out in during your sparse free time during the six years (New York vs. Boston) and then find a job where ever.

Ok. Thanks for clearing that up gmccr39!
