Rutgers Student willing to answer any questions!

Last year I found out 12/16, so I would expect it to come by New Years. Don’t worry too much if you don’t find out by then; Rutgers can be like that.

Pharmacy’s one of the better schools at Rutgers and one of the top programs in the nation (top 25 i believe?). I’d recommend you consider matriculating if accepted; it’s probably the hardest school to get into at Rutgers (stats comparable to the top 30 USNews schools) and pharmacy as a career overall can be rewarding if that’s your kind of thing.

(This post assumes that rankings have at least some level of authority to what you gain out of college, but that’s ultimately a different story.)

Yes, you definitely can change intended major. Technically, no one, at least in SAS, has declared a major at the start of frosh year. The way you would officially go about doing it is googling myMajor to be able to access a system that allows you to declare a major once you have the prerequisite classes completed, usually the intro courses to the subject (even if through AP credit). Then, you usually need department approval in the form of going to the department head in the building associated with that major. eg. Tillett Hall in Livingston for Psychology, NJ Hall on College Ave for Economics…etc. I haven’t quite gotten to declare my major yet, so I’m not sure what getting approval is exactly like, but it seems pretty straight-forward and all explained on the website. Minors can usually be declared through that site immediately without departmental approval.

For engineering majors, however, students MUST declare by the end of freshman year to graduate in time, lest they take summer courses. Frosh usually take the same courses like calc, gen chem, comp sci, analytical physics, and engineering orientation lecture together as part of the engineering core, and then go on as sophs in classes of their respective majors.

Switching into majors between schools is a bit harder. If one decides after matriculating into SAS that they want to major in chemical engineering, then they must wait until the end of the semester to apply using the School-to-School Transfer Application (easily googleable) as long as they have prereqs done as well. More details can be found on the website, especially to clear up on some of the vague descriptions I’ve included, but that’s basically the Rutgers major selection process in a nutshell.

Thanks for the info!!
